all below are true except for K...which is a trick question. It was milano italy where they had trouble with couriers...who wore high cost and fashionable shoes around town...fedex uniforms and shoes were beneath them.....

Some more info for you that are history buffs a-FedEx once owned a Rocket company that launced satellites, in order to bid on future Space Shuttle launches(the space shuttle fleet was originally designed to launch one shuttle per week. (FedEx Spacetran) b-FedEx once had 200 Flight Stewardess's(inherited from Flying Tigers which chartered 747's for transporting Military personnel around the world) c-FedEx flies military missions (Thru the civilian aircraft fleet; they don't fly missions but do fly cargo to dangerous places...they have many volunteers to fly these missions) d-FedEx once bought it's own company that built Vans( they build Z-Vans) e-FedEx once owned a share in a ocean ship that laid fiber optics in the Pacific (had part ownership thru FITC which resold telecom products and circuits to companies like COSTCO and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines) f-FedEx looked at a multi distribution broadband wireless system. They were going to dispatch and link FedEx systems during the day, and transmit free movies at night (One of the many Multi Distribution wireless systems that Jim Moore looked at) g-FedEx once pondered a door to door delivery of people. A FedEx bus would pick you up and deliver you to local airports where FedEx jets would fly you to destinations on red eye flights(FedEx bought five 737's to start this service, but it took one year to get one license to land at Midway airport in Chicago, that plus some oil embargos cancelled the project ) h-FedEx almost invested in a $B fleet of Ocean going dirigibles.. (Tom Bullion led the project) i-FedEx looked at building the largest seaplane for ocean transport j-FedEx looked at building the fast ship possible for ocean transport both i,j were some of the many possible options researched for ocean going traffic k-FedEx had difficulty in getting couriers in Great Britain to dress in courier uniform (this one is false, kind of, It is true but happened in Italy where it was fashionable for couriers to wear fashionable & pretty shoes...not plain black ones...)

Carl Wayne Hardeman8/30/2013

Another one: Fred owned many of our planes at one time and leased them to FedEx.

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/30/2013

I heard that FWS and a group of execs formed a company to buy and lease some of the jets back to FedEx since it has been the strategy to not own most assets. At one time, some of the leases were actually owned by Disney, thru which we sponsored Space Mountain for several years.

FedEx TriviaIn the mid 80's Ron Ponder was instructed to consolidate the telecom & IT for International under his domain. International groups, trying to turn a profit and build the business had invested minimally in infrastructure. FedEx's approach was to buy small companies and convert them to FedEx standards.Ron Ponder went on a tour of the countries. In one country he was especially startled. There was one AS400 computer in a basement, one programmer and something on top of the AS400 that shouldn't be there. In which country, and what did he find on top of the AS400??

Connie Morgan8/29/2013

Brussels Belgium?

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/29/2013

not Brussels.

John Wilkinson8/29/2013

I think I remember that it was a coffee machine, but can't remember the country.

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/29/2013

not a coffee machine, although I have no doubt that a coffee machine was probably on a computer server somewhere

Dan Elliot8/29/2013

If it was a vending machine in Europe. It was a beer machine!

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/29/2013

or cigarette machine...

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/29/2013

The correct answer, from Winn Stephenson Milano, Italy - a pigeon. No AC so they left the window open to help cool the computer?? --------- and there was also a birds nest on top of the computer....

FedEx Trivia QuizWhen I worked in LineHaul, I was surprised to find that 580 of the Corporation's 1140 applications were in Linehaul(Air, Hub,Trucking apps). Some of these were small compared to COSMOS etc but were critical components in daily operations. This is a simplified view of a file/table which verifies which products can go to which stations. What is this downloadable table/file called? --------------------------------- It begins with Operations Research, who for each month gives a file with one day of operations for that month. Every product type that flows to every zip code. It also takes into account historical data, how many weekends in the month, holidays and where the end of the month falls to generate the next months table. From there over 20 applications operate on that data, which expands to an operations volume and sort plan for every day of the month, for every sort location for several months. This data generates sort tables, Powerpad, PowerPickup, Automation and any other sortation device to generate labels or to sort packages. This data generates the number & schedule of aircraft, on which lanes and types of aircraft for every flight for the month. Also these applications feed into app that generates routes for the Pilot bid system to bid and schedule flights for all pilots each month. And dozens of over systems not seen are affected from this Table.

Carl Wayne Hardeman8/30/2013

Fwiw there were far more programs and files and lines of code in payroll/personnel system than in cosmos, but you could argue about complexity.

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/30/2013

URSA it is!!!

Deby Abbott Jolley8/30/2013

Deby Abbott Jolley8/30/2013

Fast Ship: from Winn Stephenson As a side note, I was at a lunch mtg with FWS and the fast ship guru. The hull design was the main driver of a fast ship. The Atlantic and Pacific have different wave cycles with one being about 6 feet different that the other. So a fast ship for the Pacific would not be as fast in the Atlantic and vice versa. It was a very interesting conversation and I re-discovered that there are great amounts of detail about things you would never think of by personal you have never heard about. I was humbled. FWS clearly was in the mind to do this, but backed off for some reason unknown to me.

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/30/2013

from FedEx Legends Site(Ops REsearch page) & Tom Bullion: Aircraft Carrier Freighter: Another design was a fast ocean going large freighter called Fastship. This ocean going freighter would be 1000 feet long. Mr. Smith hired a naval architect named Reuven Leopold and Tom was assigned to be his FedEx rep. They actually had a 40 foot model of the ship designed for testing. To test the design and obtain a hull classification for insurance purposes, they shipped the model to Das Veritas, Norway. It passed all of the sea keeping tests but one, breaking into two pieces when a humongous quartering wave hit it. Tom looked at extremely fast submarines, sea planes, wing-in-ground effect aircraft and many other concepts that FedEx could consider for new businesses.

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/2/2013

FedEx Trivia In the mid 90's, Harry Dalton's group strategy was to provide couriers with an ASTRA printer & get URSA barcode labels on all FedEx packages. Around 40% of the package volume were shipped with just airbills, and they didn't have a bar code for automatic sorting. Automation and EDI(Powership+) customers provided shipping labels. With barcode and URSA the error rates would go down.Finance was presenting pushback to financing these courier printers and he couldn't get the project approved. Finance wasn't happy with the maintenance costs of the printers and scenarios to fix.In a meeting, Harry quickly made a major strategic decision, in which finance had to approve his project so he could move forward. What did Harry say?

Dan Elliot9/2/2013

it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission!

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/2/2013

....if you knew Harry....he didn't ask for forgiveness...

Dan Elliot9/2/2013

Yes, I knew Harry well...

Subject: Harry said something like this to Finance:

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/2/2013

Harry said something like this to Finance:‘Well if you are having trouble with the Maintenance costs…I’ll make it simple for you…Whenever any ASTRA printer fails…I’m just going to throw it away and buy another one…that way you don’t have to worry about maintenance costs… and I’ll replace them each year.’This dropped the ROI(return on investment) slightly but was still too good a return, so Finance approved the project.Of course the blunt way Harry had in proclaiming this to finance was fun to watch. The printer actually lasted longer than planned. Instead of couriers wearing the printers, most just left them at their van, and printed the labels when they brought the packages from the customer.

FedEx Trivia Quiz? When Federal Express purchased Caliber Systems, that corporation included about 4 entities.FDX was formed as the Corporate entity over all the companies and colors were assigned to logos for each company. The FedEx color scheme remained the same Purple plus Orange.FedEx Ground chose Purple & Green. Why did Ground choose green?...and why did FedEx Services Not get a real color?

Deby Abbott Jolley9/11/2013

Just guessing - but was the green for prosperity - the color of money? And Services was designed to service all of the op-cos, so it shouldn't have a color, but be "color-less" - as in, the absence/presence of all colors. (another guess)

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/11/2013

answer to services is correct

Deby Abbott Jolley9/11/2013

Can I have a second guess? Green for growth??

Jimmy Glenn Burk9/11/2013

The President of Caliber Systems who became the President of FedEx Ground was Dan O'Sullivan who was of Irish extraction....thus Irish Green.
