My Brother Ray's space mountain story from www.fedexlegends.info/stories
Space Mountain FedEx Story
During the time that FedEx sponsored Space Mountain, FedEx employees could enter the ride thru a special company lounge, located out of sight, to the right of the main entrance.
Families could get a drink and snack, and were taken thru a interconnected corridor to a place where they were put on the ride, just before the normal line of people were loaded.
It was a nice thing to have, especially on a hot day. It was open Monday thru Friday.
One of my brothers, also a FedEx employee, took his Family to Orlando and wanted to ride Space Mountain. But he went on a Saturday,,, not knowing it was closed. The line wait was about an hour long at the entrance.
He found a maintenance employee and wanted to know where the lounge was. The mx person gruffly told him it was closed, and my brother said, he was with FedEx & just wanted to get his family on the ride.
The MX guy gruffly said...Well....Ok....follow me...
Instead of taking him to the lounge, he took my brother's family to the main entrance and started walking past the main line, telling them to move over...and he walked them all the way to the loading point of the ride, and put them on. My bro said that people were yelling...take me...take me....
He was embarrassed a little....but not too much.
It was very good for employees while it lasted: Space Mountain & the FedEx lounge

Story
We will show you how to Take Care of yourself.....
TO
You ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR Your HealthAround 1986 I was supposed to be promoted to a Sr Tech Advisor, but management messed up the paperwork. Instead I was quickly interviewed and placed into a Manager's job for my promotion. I was a manager before coming to FedEx, so I was fine with the new position.A Mandatory 1 week Management Training class ensued. On Sunday, I had to go to Olive Branch to the Holiday Inn Training facility to get a physical on a Sunday afternoon. The company in all of it's wisdom had decided that work weeks of up to 65 hours was taking a toll on managers So the company was going to teach us how to stay healthy by finding the time to exercise...Monday
Up at 5:30am, trot over to the makeshift gym, and aerobics for 45 minutes...and not any old physical exercise..this was fast paced aerobics to Hall & Oates music with a professional instructor...Many of the students had imbibed much drink Sunday night in the bar and 5 minutes into the exercises they looked like death.... 10 minutes into the exercises....we were stopped...exercises overThere was a little scornful pep talk about how we need to take better care of ourselves....and be ready the next morningWe went to our rooms, showered, breakfast and then began our 10 hour training day.Tuesday
Same thing, rise at 5:30, over to the gym....loud Hall & Oates music......and 10 minutes later about 10 of the 40 students looked like they were going to pass out(thankfully I wasn't one of them)....class stoppedThat ended the mandatory exercise program for the week, and maybe forever. We were told the company didn't want anyone to pass out or die at Manager's Training, and had decided it was now our responsibility to stay healthy...not the company.I understand that there had been discussions in previous years of building a gym by the airport for employees to work out, and discussions on purchasing a resort for just FedEx employees to travel to for vacations at a discount....but those never evolved....we had to take care of our own health.......And for those who went to the Olive Branch facility it was a great place to be. It's where Holiday Inn trained their chefs, so pastries abounded...I'm surprised we weren't fed a vegan & gluten free diet ...for our Health
Jack Brown10/26/2014
i remember the "Leadership Institute" as it was called. That was the first regular exercising I had had since Air Force Basic Training.
Mark Baugh10/26/2014
When I attended in 93 local folks were no longer required to spend their nights there and I saw no sign of exercise, thank goodness
Ben Moore10/27/2014
When Holiday Inn decided to sell Holiday Inn University, FedEx considered buying it as a company hotel for employees visiting Memphis. The story I heard was that JLB said he didn't want people calling him about cockroaches!

Alan McArtor(former FedEx SVP) in the news:
The demise of the Concorde meant luxury air travelers no longer had a supersonic option for their travel needs. It looks like they may once again be jetting around the world in record time thanks to the Aerion AS2. This supersonic jet can make the trip from London to New York in just 4 hours and 20 minutes.
It’s a joint partnership between Aerion and Airbus who are working together on this aircraft. Although currently a design concept, Airbus chairman Allan McArtor told Flying that they intend to see things through to a production plane.https://autos.yahoo.com/news/aerion-supersonic-jet-london-york-4-hours-133002534.html

FedEx Trivia Quiz:In the mid 90's CIO Dennis Jones was trying to get close to Microsoft. To do so, he gave them a large contract to rewrite a new version of Automation...now called Powership. Microsoft sent their experts(people just out of college) to help with this rewrite(called Warp..or something like that)...so it failed. What was DHJ's endgame and what was he trying to get Microsoft to do for FedEx?
Deby Abbott Jolley10/29/2014
I remember that. They moved into 3063 Airways and brought their "culture" with them. The objective was to move from DOS to Windows - and I think he wanted to simplify our complicated coding - however our coding *had* to be complicated, I guess. Anyway, they couldn't make it work. We finally did make the move internally from Powership2 to CAFE.
Jim McBryde10/29/2014
I was on the core team working with them to write the specs... And this was after powership 2 (prelude to cafe). It was Microsoft consulting and not real microsoft. We referred it internally as maui as that's where we wanted to go after the release and Microsoft always used cities as code names for projects. Also just known as the rewrite. The purpose was to put a group of developers together with the users and marketing to work seamlessly as one team in one space. We had couches and chairs. We worked off site alot and team building and brainstorming was considered imperative.
Much the same context he tried when building the wtc in collierville. There would be no cubes or permanent seating. Groups would come together in an open workspace to develop an application and then go on to their next assignment in another workspace. It never got off the ground as properties put developers in one building and the users and marketing in other buildings eventually leading to cubicles being put up in collierville.
Essentially he was trying to incorporate the Microsoft dna for development into fdx. Either that or drive jim thannum and Jerry Collins crazy.
Jim McBryde10/29/2014
Btw, it failed because Microsoft believed in doing the core code first and then lay on the gui. Therefore, Dennis had nothing to show for all the work because there was no workinng prototype to show.
Jimmy Glenn Burk10/29/2014
Was there also a codename called MACH?
Jim McBryde10/29/2014
Yep. I can't remember what it stood for. I still have the brd as we called it in those days. I will look it up. I had forgotten that.
Jimmy Glenn Burk10/29/2014
DHJ had visions....
He wanted to get in with the West Coast developers and transfer that expertise to FedEx which he thought was mostly IBM/COBOL centric which it was at the time. The mainframe did run at least 90% of the core applications. Exceptions were DADS on DEC, Customs Clearance/Broker/Select on Tandem, GOCC, many of LineHaul apps and sort systems, and Customer Automation, and some initial station processor prototypes.
The end goal was to have Microsoft put a Federal Express SHIP icon on every Windows device that Microsoft sold to anyone, or at least the option to activate shipping software. That never happened.
Another vision was to have 7-10 different versions of Powership. One for PC's, Mac, PS3 for a low profile desktop, Unix, etc. This proved to be a support nightmare with all the continuous changes being added to Cust Automation devices
Jim McBryde10/29/2014
Dj was a good man.
Jim McBryde10/29/2014
I remember the plan to put the ship icon on windows but didnt know it was connected to mach. That came afterwards as i remember. The core team was penne valadie, luke jones, Jerry Collins and me. We reported to jim thannum. We had 3 or 4 other programmers on the team as well.
Laurie A. Tucker10/30/2014
Y'all are bringing back some memories that are giving me the shakes! After the Microsoft effort failed, we scrapped all of it, started over and it was several years before we released SHIP software…and when we did, it was a domestic only version, something we had sworn we would never do (i.e. release a version without International in it). Persistence paid off, and let us never forget Project Accelerator. That one almost killed me, too!
Jim McBryde10/30/2014
But if we hadnt, I would have never had the opportunity to spend the summer in Brussels working with danny jannsions on euro or in England working on the rewrite. I remember trying to use euro software to support ipd out of the us since ship didn't support international.

FedEx Trivia QuizWhen Fdx changed all the companies names to FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Custom Critical etc.... all the companies were given a color... except Serviceswhy were the companies given colors? ...and why did FedEx Services not receive a color?......I think it was given a metallic tint like platinum
Gerald Herring10/31/2014
Services didn't have any trucks?
John Wilkinson10/31/2014
Was it only the revenue generators were given colors?
Deby Abbott Jolley10/31/2014
Because Services was/is boring?
Jimmy Glenn Burk10/31/2014
John is correct. Only Divisions that produced products or services were given colors, although eventually Caliber Logistics was moved into Services, and a Tech Services component that provided outside MX and Repair services was also in FedEx Services.
One of the Marketing themes was that multiple FedEx trucks/Vans could arrive to the same shipping dock each day, and Colors would help keep products from different companies from getting mixed up.

FedEx Trivia QuizIn the early 90’s SIS had a new automation device built. It started out as a calculator sized device, where a customer could do simple things: push a few buttons and get a dispatch, order supplies, check to see if FedEx delivered to zip codes etc. Eventually about a 1000 were ordered. It was called COSMOS IIIc. Project was cancelled after the first order.a. Why was it cancelled?
b. Who cancelled it?
c. What was its codename and why was it called that?
David Hunt11/4/2014
A. Because powership was being pushed out.
B. Dennis Jones
C. Hello Federal ... Not sure other than the commerical and it used a telephone line to dail in.
Jimmy Glenn Burk11/5/2014
David is correct. Initially the device was initially proposed at $50 each with just a few functions, but cost about $700 when rolled out. PC's were $2500 each, but continued to drop and were a little over $1,000 and were full functioned at rollout time; so DHJ decided to drop it and roll out the PCs. Jim Barksdale had said he wanted a device simple enough for his wife Sally to use...so it was codenamed the SallyB
Ben Moore11/5/2014
I'm glad it didn't have to be simple enough for JLB to use. I recall he was the only person with a Mac for a long time.

ANSWERS
TRUE 1 Federal Express once looked at a wireless distribution system for dispatch that could also be used to transmit free movies at night to major cities;
One of the ideas that came out of Jim Moore & the Radio Group
True 2. Federal Express once was a manufacturer of Vans.
FedEx purchased Z-Vans, a manufacturer of tall vans.
True 3_When the 727’s were going to be grounded by the FAA for any night time flights over populated areas, FedEx co-developed silencers for the jets
Hush Kits
TRUE 4- When 727’s were going to be grounded because they had exceeded the stress conditions for the life of the jet; FedEx bought a $2000 computer, and an $800K software program, and spent a million dollars to modify the computer program…to keep the 727 in the air
The 727s had exceeded the weight limitations on the wings by flying freight vs passengers. The FAA had confidence in a certain stress application and told FedEx that if they would modify the program for every major component of each 727 aircraft, then they would certify the jets using that package.
False 5-Before FedEx Home Delivery was created by FedEx Ground, Federal Express successfully implement a home delivery only service using part time workers
There was not a successful implementation due to the high costs of AGFS
TRUE 6- FedEx was part owner in a Rocket Launch business
FEDEX SpaceTran
TRUE 7-FedEx has owned container ships & undersea fiber laying ships
Thru FITC & subsidiary’s purchased, there were ships partially or fully owned for a time.
TRUE 8-One of Flying Tigers biggest customer bases was flying pigs & horses
The Pilots hated flying those animals from S. America
FALSE 9-Flying Tigers did $1B in bulk freight shipping; when FedEx purchased them they were able to keep those customers.
FedEx was only able to keep about 30% of that business. (But the main reason for purchasing Flying Tigers was that they had vested landing rights around the world, which passed to FedEx)
TRUE 10_FedEx once had stewardess’s
Flying Tigers had a passenger service, mostly for military movements and they came with that purchase.
TRUE 11-FedEx once did it’s own printing
Supposedly it was abandoned with talk of unionizing that area.
FALSE 12- Three Flying Tigers jets crashed just before FedEx took over that airline
One Flying Tigers 747 crashed after the purchase but before Federal Express took over.
Chris Bentley11/14/2014
4) only the 727s that were converted from passenger aircraft were affected, as they had smaller frame rails than the purpose built freighters. The manufacturers maximum weights on any aircraft were never exceeded - the intrepid W&B programmers made sure of that And, the W&B programming was substantially altered to reduce the stresses on the converted 727s by adding additional checks for 'adjacent zones' with lower limits.
