FedEx offered a service called SSS, Signature Security Service, where a package was supposed to be in direct custody of an employee at all times and the there was a signature log that each employee signed as the custody passed from one employee to the next. Even the pilots signed the logs during the air transfer of the package. For the government, I believe there was a a slightly different version of the SSS feature called CSS, Constant Surveillance Service, that had a little bit higher requirements for security. (Maybe the package was supposed to remain in direct custody of the employee, like within eyesight, at all times). Anyway, I think FedEx discontinued both services shortly after the incident. Tom Oliver did the response on 20/20 and it wasn't his finest hour although it was a good response. The one thing that he said afterwards was that he regretted was that he didn't point out that a school bus parked next to the school, as was shown during the segment, had a tank of gasoline that was potentially more dangerous than the Class C explosive that was identified as a potential threat to the school. 20/20 made a big deal out of the fact that the Class C explosives were so dangerous that they were Cargo plane only and were not allowed to be transported on passenger aircraft. Gasoline was also a Cargo Only Hazardous Material but you could only ship a pint or less in a package. So a gallon of gasoline was considered to be too dangerous to even ship by cargo plane. At that time, FedEx also transported Class B explosives but only on an airport to airport basis. I think FedEx stopped carrying Class B explosives but continued carrying Class C explosives.

Ray Lipham4/28/2016

Also, I think that another allegation that the disgruntled ex-courier made on 20/20 was that the dispatchers and couriers made drug deals over the radio bands that FedEx used to communicate with couriers on their routes.

Ray Lipham4/28/2016

I just did a Google search to see if I could any record of the 20/20 segment on FedEx. I didn't but what I did find was that an ex-courier wrote a book with allegations that are totally unbelievable. It is both pathetic and humorous. It may not be the same courier and he may not be referring to the same 20/20 segment. https://www.bookdepository.com/Fred-Smiths-Fedex-Plantation-MR-Gary-Grant-Rullo-Sr/9780615636245

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/28/2016

Now that is one of the most silliest books I've ever heard of....If you order the book it comes with free shipping...I wonder if he ships it via FedEx?

Don Rose4/28/2016

That book is totally laughable.

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/28/2016

Ray's answer is correct. Of the 200,000 shipments with the service over 2 years, only 182 govt shipments were suspect. Of those FedEx admitted they made mistakes on 27 shipments. The Defense Dept stopped using the service for 6 weeks, then wanted FedEx to allow them to start using the service again on probation. They had asked FedEx to offer the service even though it was a low volume product. As Ray commented, FedEx stopped the service with the government. FedEx also stopped advertising with ABC for a while.

Melissa Leech Ziemer4/28/2016

The "munitions" in vans parked by schools were car airbag replacement modules. Yes, they have explosives in them--but was really twisted in the reporting.

FedEx TriviaThere is something at the hub that is valuable and that you need to load containers. When you need one, you typically have to go search and basically steal this item. What is it?

An aircraft ?? Hehe 😉

Margaret Burkeen5/3/2016

Jimmy Glenn Burk5/3/2016

Margaret had the correct answer: Tug; people would get a tug, and remove the seats to keep tugs in their area...if you needed one, you had to go out and find one...

Judy Davidson5/18/2016

I took the buyout Nov 2013. I signed the FedEx retirement pension kit I rec'd in late March 2016 to begin receiving my pension June 1, 2016. Got a phone call yesterday from FedEx benefits that my portable pension was miscalculated by $7k (not in my favor). It's hard to believe that they aren't compensating for their error. It's hard to believe a mistake like this. 2 weeks before I'm supposed to receive it. BTW, I'm 62. so the retirement age change should have nothing to do with me. Anyone else experience this?

Sandy Bringhurst Howard5/18/2016

Wow!!!

Judy Davidson5/18/2016

yeah...Sandy, it floored me. How can they make such a huge mistake..and just find it when I'm about to take it?? My birth date was correct, I can't imagine mistakes like this...not from a huge corporation for a 31 yr employee.

Sandy Bringhurst Howard5/18/2016

If you have it in writing, I think they should honor it!

Judy Davidson5/18/2016

its in writing. ..its the pension forms they sent me

Ron Houston5/18/2016

I was told several times over the last several years; up until about 2 months ago that when I turn 55 I would be REQUIRED to start receiving - now, I'm told that was ALL incorrect information and that I do not have to start it at 55. I wonder how accurate the latest info is and wonder how many started at 55 because of bad information. (OR was all of that information different due to changes? )

Carol Gassaway Kabakoff5/18/2016

I took the buyout in May 2013. I was 55 and chose to start receiving my pension but it was my choice. Not required.

Don Rose5/18/2016

I took the early retirement offer (the first one) in 2003. I received my final paycheck on Sept 30, 2003 and received my first pension check on Oct 1, 2003 (the next day). I was 1 month shy of my 55th birthday. The portable pension had not been in effect long before I retired, and I ended up getting at lump sum check for that a few months after I retired. I was also a 31 year employee. If you still have the paperwork that was submitted to you for your signature with the original figures quoted to you, then you should be able to hold benefits accountable for their error.

Judy Davidson5/19/2016

I spoke with Antonio at Fedex benefits today w/my financial advisor on the line as well. I asked him if I would be compensated for their mistake. He told me they would not. I do have the documents they sent me with traditional and portable pension amounts, I signed them, sent them back to Fedex the last week of March. They called me yesterday telling me the amount in portable pension sent to me was an calculating error. My financial advisor did mention in the conversation w/ Antonio that I could go the legal route if I chose to. Antonio didn't respond to that. I'm dumbfounded by the response FedEx gave me. This is NOT the FedEx I knew.
