MemphisDailyNews.comFedEx Shareholders Reject Proposal Over RedskinsFedEx shareholders rejected a proposal that the shipping giant end or distance itself from its ties to the Washington Redskins. The proposal from the Oneida Indian tribe was made Monday, Sept. 29, during the company's annual shareholder meeting in Memphis. The Redskins and companies associated with the National Football League team have come under fire from Native American groups and others who say the team's name is an offensive racial slur. FedEx sponsors the Redskins home field, FedExField, in Washington, D.C.'s Maryland suburbs.Susan White, director of the Oneida Trust of the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin, said the name Redskins harkens to a time when rewards were paid for the skins of Native Americans.“We are the only race of people dehumanized by an NFL team,” White said during the meeting. The shareholders meeting was the second time in less than a week that the company’s sponsorship deal with the Redskins was in the spotlight. On Sept. 25, the Osage Nation of Oklahoma said it would boycott FedEx and urged its members to use other delivery companies until FedEx ends its relationship with the team.FedEx shareholders also rejected a proposal that would have allowed shareholders to make nominations to the company's board of directors.– Amos Maki

J. David White10/1/2014

J. David White I went to a retirement party shortly after this event (on FE 705) for friend Sam Posey who was the retiring president of the Fire Fighters Local in Memphis Fire Dept., and the MFD Paramedics that went on-board the grounded DC-10 (FE 705), had to fight their way into the cockpit because Auburn Callaway was still fighting everyone. The Firefighters had to throw Callaway down the emergency shute slide to get him off the aircraft. That aircrew was brave and gravely injured in that fight. Can you imagine being hit in the head with a hammer by someone who didn't like you? The Memphis FD Paramedics were roughed up a little by Callaway before they threw him off.

J. David White10/1/2014

J. David White I had just left the FedEx computer campus on Airways when I saw that grounded DC-10 sitting on the runway. Whew - It sends shivers down my back when you consider what may have happened if Callaway had actually gained control of FE 705 aircraft. Would he have crashed it into the MEM Hub? 2 ·

Ronnie Foster10/1/2014

Ronnie Foster Jump seated with Callaway from Memphis to LA about 3 week earlier. He was the Flt Engineer on that flight. I was flying with another DNE engineer Phong Nygen and we thought nothing about the guy, other than some rude comments he made to Phong during our trip, until this happened. Phong still had his business card that Callaway had given him during our flight. Whoa! Pretty scary thinking about it.

Management by 3 letters

This story seemed to work at FedEx occasionally when someone from the outside comes in to take a new management position. Lot's of times, I was asked to give overviews of the company to new managers, directors and sometimes VP's. It was always interesting. Most wanted to know who in the company was going to help them, and who to watch out for that might be politically motivated.

I saw an article on the 3 letters which brought this back to my memory. In some cases the new management people just wanted to know if I knew what the bonus were going to be and how often they would get raises...I knew that these people wouldn't last a year.3 Letters:

A new management person comes into a company, the outgoing manager tells him that when things aren't going right to open in order the 3 letters.

Six months later nothing is working...the manager opens the First LetterLetter #1 Blame your predecessor....that gets the person about six months of relief

and he then opens the second letterLetter #2 Re-org ...We aren't organized right! ...........Reorg..that gets some more relief but six months later...things aren't going right and he opens the third letterLetter

#3 Prepare 3 letters ------------------- ...another variation was to Blame the employees.... ...another variation...We don't have enough Proj Management

He is always a fun guy, really the same as when I met him decades ago.Met Jim in 1979 on my FedEx interview and spent many hours in his office for the Memphis DADS testing. His office on the 17th floor of Clark Tower was set up as Dispatch for Memphis. Jack Brown10/10/2014

I don't know how many people using this FB page turned 65 this year and are faced with choosing either a Medicare Supplemental plan or an Advantage plan. My wife and I have the Humana Gold Plus PPO Advantage plan. It is like having the insurance we had when I was employed. The policy covers our medical, hospitalization, drugs, and vision. We have the normal co-pays and deductibles. We started with Humana in late 2013 and will stay with them for 2015. Along with the $104 that is deducted from our Social Security, we each pay a small monthly premium ($42). Our premium for 2015 is actually going down. Another benefit (and several carriers have this) is Silver Sneakers. There is no charge for the program which covers your membership at select fitness centers in your area. I hope this info helps someone out there. I know when we were trying to decide upon a plan, we were experiencing information overload.

Angela Maynard10/10/2014

Angela Maynard I think this depends on what state and city you live in. Humana was my Mom and Dad's supplement. The first year was perfect. After one year, they embedded within the policy information a $500.00 deductible. They live in Tippah county Mississippi.

I am cross posting this from Su Chang who was also injured with Gary Holmes when a car plowed into their bicycle group head on, in California a couple years ago:Su Chang: RIP Gary. Thank you for all your words of encouragement on the road. Even though I was nowhere near your cycling abilities, you always treated me with respect. There are no words to express the profound sadness I feel over the whole senselessness of it all. Be at peace. I will never forget.

Gary is the second person from the right. He was a Systems & Communications programmer in ITD. I think he graduated with an MS in Elec Engr from UofM around 1977. Started to work at DCC in Memphis programming microcomputers for Broadcast systems, and came to FedEx around 1981 working with Jim Bentley enhancing and rolling out the DADS system to about 384 cities and 42,000+ vehicles. He worked in Radio Systems, Zapmail, Telecom, and Scanning Systems doing imaging and dimensioning systems under Jim Golden and Brett Bonner. He was planning to retire in 3 months, when this accident happened. The lady that deliberately ran into them is serving 4 years 4 months in a California prison.

Barry Poole Wow. Just two days ago, for some reason, I had a dream that I ran into Gary somewhere and he had totally recovered and I was shocked because I didn't know. I was around Gary at work for many years but also while we planned trips to the World Airline Road Race 5K & 10K in Germany and Australia. He also got me enthusiastic enough to participate in a couple of triathlons. He finished the races long before I did. 1 ·

Beware the Tie I worked with Gary at DCC in 1979. Around 1981 he was terminated by a hot headed director there. Everyone knew that he would be hired back after cooling off period. I was at FedEx and Jim Moore was looking for a programmer to work on DADS with Jim Bentley. I called Gary and set up an interview for him at FedEx. He came to the interview and stopped by to see me...and he had a suit on. He said he had never worn a suit, and borrowed his current one from his Dad, and also his Dads tie and shoes. His aversion to ties and suits went with him thru his career at FedEx. At one point he was in a meeting that CIO Ron Ponder headed. Later that day Gary received a call from Dr. Ponder Dr. Ponder: Hi Gary, this is Ron Ponder... Gary: Well.....Hello Dr. Ponder: Gary...I was just wondering if you are doing OK...are you getting what you need in your group, are you feeling OK?? Gary: Well...sure I'm doing OK... Dr. Ponder: That's good...Gary...could you do me a favor??? Gary: Well...sure Dr. Ponder: In the future...whenever you attend a meeting that I am at....could find a tie somewhere and put it on...and wear it to my meeting?? Gary: Well....sure..... Dr. Ponder: thanks Gary...I would appreciate.....good bye Gary: good bye I'm not sure Gary ever found a tie...or attended another Dr. Ponder's meeting, but several years later at a Nonconnah river Fall Festival at Business Park...Gary finally wore a tie as a costume.....It was a Tshirt with a Tie painted on it..... Gary Memory Beware the Ketchup Gary seemed to always do things that he was unaware that he did...that didn't normally happen to other humanoids... He loved to eat, as we always do. Before he started Ironman stuff, he loved Panchos and Catfish cabin. At Catfish Cabin on Airways, he had a special ritual about eating. He would eat all his fish & fries and everything else...but leave his hushpuppies. After consuming the meal, he turned full attention to the hushpuppies...which he considered Dessert... He would grab a Ketchup bottle, shake it with rigor...pour on the ketchup for each hushpuppy, then eat them with a knife and fork. One day at the Cabin, he finished his meal, grabbed the ketchup bottle...and started the heavy shaking part.............but Someone hadn't put the cap on securely...and today...the ketchup happened to be very thin..... The ketchup spilled forth from the bottle...not to the next table...but over that table and hit someone on the other side of room, covering his shirt with the fine ketchup Gary was embarrassed of course, but the Cabin management came to the rescue with an offer to cover all the cleaning costs of the person covered in the ketchup... Gary shook the bottle more lightly after that... 1 ·

Beware Upset Pilots

Gary flew around the world doing Ironman stuff. He told this story after returning from Europe. He jump seated back on a DC-10. He and another employee boarded the jet. Gary had his bicycle with him. The pilot and co-pilot boarded and the pilot looked a the bicycle and said 'that thing isn't flying on my aircraft, get it off..then went to thru the door to the cockpit...just before he went into the cockpit, he turned around and said to both the jump seaters...AND DONT TOUCH OUR FOOD, IT IS FOR US!!! the co-pilot was following the pilot...just shaking his head in dis-belief. When the pilot was out of sight, the co-pilot took the bicycle, put it behind the curtain and tied it down...and told Gary...it will be ok back here and out of sight.... After the take-off...Gary turned to the jump seater and asked...Why do the pilots have to be so mean sometimes.....The young employee, who was also hollered at...said...Well, I'm a pilot too, but only a 727 pilot....The DC-10 pilot knows that and is just giving me a hard time too..... Gary just shook his head in dis-belief of the seemingly caste system among the pilots... ------

4-5 years later, the pilots were negotiating a new contract and there was a lot of friction. In Gary's running club he had many pilots who were his friends. He wrote a funny 'ode to the pilots' poem, telling everyone in the club that they need to support the pilots...and many reasons why...all which were occasionally true, and somewhat funny...but really teasing his friends in his club. There really wasn't an internet or browsers available then, Gary put it on a closed message usenet board. Several of his pilot friends thought it was funny and sent it to their pilot friends. Within 24 hours, it was posted to all fedex pilots around the world. The union reps got a hold of it, and used it as an example that everyone hated the pilots, and they used it as a rallying cry against the company. Within 2 days, the Union contacted Gary...and he was banned from flying jump seat for Life...(although he eventually was able to fly again). Two pilots in Alaska, fixing to fly to Memphis, contacted Memphis security and said they were afraid to fly to Memphis and wanted Gary expelled from Company property. They even sent guards to my building to escort Gary away...we sent them away and they complied. So, small things can become big issues especially in Gary's world.

Supervisors plus the air traffic controllers still working with 900 military controllers then manned the airports. All air traffic was shut down a a day or two, then the airports were opened with 1) no night flights and 2) only one aircraft at a time could be in an airspace lane(ie no other aircraft could enter that land till that flight landed). What did Federal Express do?

Jon Peacock10/23/2014

Jon Peacock That was a fun time for us Flight Instructors. We were giving position reports to the controllers that were on duty or not on strike, watching us on radar, confirming what they were seeing on their radar scopes. I even gave a position report of a hot air ballon East of Olive Branch that the controller could see on radar, but could not figure out what that "thing" was on his radar. 1 ·

My memory fades,,,but what I remember being told was that the initial re-opening of flights did not include any night time flights, which negatively affected Federal Express. Federal Express trucked everything it could the first couple days, and contacted TN Senator Howard Baker. He got the rules changed very quickly for FedEx as a safety or national defense issue. Many companies depended on next day delivery and FedEx was one of a few companies delivering(UPS didn't enter this market till 1982). I was told that FedEx was allowed to fly by visual flight rules, until enough controllers were available to man night shifts. 1 ·

My Brother Ray's space mountain story from www.fedexlegends.info/stories Space Mountain FedEx Story During the time that FedEx sponsored Space Mountain, FedEx employees could enter the ride thru a special company lounge, located out of sight, to the right of the main entrance. Families could get a drink and snack, and were taken thru a interconnected corridor to a place where they were put on the ride, just before the normal line of people were loaded. It was a nice thing to have, especially on a hot day. It was open Monday thru Friday. One of my brothers, also a FedEx employee, took his Family to Orlando and wanted to ride Space Mountain. But he went on a Saturday,,, not knowing it was closed. The line wait was about an hour long at the entrance. He found a maintenance employee and wanted to know where the lounge was. The mx person gruffly told him it was closed, and my brother said, he was with FedEx & just wanted to get his family on the ride. The MX guy gruffly said...Well....Ok....follow me... Instead of taking him to the lounge, he took my brother's family to the main entrance and started walking past the main line, telling them to move over...and he walked them all the way to the loading point of the ride, and put them on. My bro said that people were yelling...take me...take me.... He was embarrassed a little....but not too much. FedEx Legends Comments & Stories fedexlegends.info Edited · 1 ·

Story We will show you how to Take Care of yourself..... TO You ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR Your Health

Around 1986 I was supposed to be promoted to a Sr Tech Advisor, but management messed up the paperwork. Instead I was quickly interviewed and placed into a Manager's job for my promotion. I was a manager before coming to FedEx, so I was fine with the new position.A Mandatory 1 week Management Training class ensued. On Sunday, I had to go to Olive Branch to the Holiday Inn Training facility to get a physical on a Sunday afternoon. The company in all of it's wisdom had decided that work weeks of up to 65 hours was taking a toll on managers So the company was going to teach us how to stay healthy by finding the time to exercise...Monday Up at 5:30am, trot over to the makeshift gym, and aerobics for 45 minutes...and not any old physical exercise..this was fast paced aerobics to Hall & Oates music with a professional instructor...Many of the students had imbibed much drink Sunday night in the bar and 5 minutes into the exercises they looked like death.... 10 minutes into the exercises....we were stopped...exercises over

There was a little scornful pep talk about how we need to take better care of ourselves....and be ready the next morningWe went to our rooms, showered, breakfast and then began our 10 hour training day.Tuesday Same thing, rise at 5:30, over to the gym....loud Hall & Oates music......and 10 minutes later about 10 of the 40 students looked like they were going to pass out(thankfully I wasn't one of them)....class stoppedThat ended the mandatory exercise program for the week, and maybe forever. We were told the company didn't want anyone to pass out or die at Manager's Training, and had decided it was now our responsibility to stay healthy...not the company.I understand that there had been discussions in previous years of building a gym by the airport for employees to work out, and discussions on purchasing a resort for just FedEx employees to travel to for vacations at a discount....but those never evolved....we had to take care of our own health.......And for those who went to the Olive Branch facility it was a great place to be. It's where Holiday Inn trained their chefs, so pastries abounded...I'm surprised we weren't fed a vegan & gluten free diet ...for our Health

FedEx Trivia Quiz:In the mid 90's CIO Dennis Jones was trying to get close to Microsoft. To do so, he gave them a large contract to rewrite a new version of Automation...now called Powership. Microsoft sent their experts(people just out of college) to help with this rewrite(called Warp..or something like that)...so it failed. What was DHJ's endgame and what was he trying to get Microsoft to do for FedEx?

Deby Abbott Jolley10/29/2014

Deby Abbott Jolley I remember that. They moved into 3063 Airways and brought their "culture" with them. The objective was to move from DOS to Windows - and I think he wanted to simplify our complicated coding - however our coding *had* to be complicated, I guess. Anyway, they couldn't make it work. We finally did make the move internally from Powership2 to CAFE. 1 ·

Jim McBryde10/29/2014

Jim McBryde I was on the core team working with them to write the specs... And this was after powership 2 (prelude to cafe). It was Microsoft consulting and not real microsoft. We referred it internally as maui as that's where we wanted to go after the release and Microsoft always used cities as code names for projects. Also just known as the rewrite. The purpose was to put a group of developers together with the users and marketing to work seamlessly as one team in one space. We had couches and chairs. We worked off site alot and team building and brainstorming was considered imperative. Much the same context he tried when building the wtc in collierville. There would be no cubes or permanent seating. Groups would come together in an open workspace to develop an application and then go on to their next assignment in another workspace. It never got off the ground as properties put developers in one building and the users and marketing in other buildings eventually leading to cubicles being put up in collierville. Essentially he was trying to incorporate the Microsoft dna for development into fdx. Either that or drive jim thannum and Jerry Collins crazy. 3 ·

Jim McBryde10/29/2014

Jim McBryde Btw, it failed because Microsoft believed in doing the core code first and then lay on the gui. Therefore, Dennis had nothing to show for all the work because there was no workinng prototype to show.

Jimmy Glenn Burk10/29/2014

Was there also a codename called MACH? 2 ·

Jim McBryde10/29/2014

Jim McBryde Yep. I can't remember what it stood for. I still have the brd as we called it in those days. I will look it up. I had forgotten that. 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk10/29/2014

DHJ had visions.... He wanted to get in with the West Coast developers and transfer that expertise to FedEx which he thought was mostly IBM/COBOL centric which it was at the time. The mainframe did run at least 90% of the core applications. Exceptions were DADS on DEC, Customs Clearance/Broker/Select on Tandem, GOCC, many of LineHaul apps and sort systems, and Customer Automation, and some initial station processor prototypes. The end goal was to have Microsoft put a Federal Express SHIP icon on every Windows device that Microsoft sold to anyone, or at least the option to activate shipping software. That never happened. Another vision was to have 7-10 different versions of Powership. One for PC's, Mac, PS3 for a low profile desktop, Unix, etc. This proved to be a support nightmare with all the continuous changes being added to Cust Automation devices 2 ·

Jim McBryde10/29/2014

Jim McBryde Dj was a good man. 2 ·

Jim McBryde10/29/2014

Jim McBryde I remember the plan to put the ship icon on windows but didnt know it was connected to mach. That came afterwards as i remember. The core team was penne valadie, luke jones, Jerry Collins and me. We reported to jim thannum. We had 3 or 4 other programmers on the team as well. 1 ·

Laurie A. Tucker10/30/2014

Laurie A. Tucker Y'all are bringing back some memories that are giving me the shakes! After the Microsoft effort failed, we scrapped all of it, started over and it was several years before we released SHIP software…and when we did, it was a domestic only version, something we had sworn we would never do (i.e. release a version without International in it). Persistence paid off, and let us never forget Project Accelerator. That one almost killed me, too! :) 2 ·

Jim McBryde10/30/2014

Jim McBryde But if we hadnt, I would have never had the opportunity to spend the summer in Brussels working with danny jannsions on euro or in England working on the rewrite. I remember trying to use euro software to support ipd out of the us since ship didn't support international.

When Fdx changed all the companies names to FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Custom Critical etc.... all the companies were given a color... except Serviceswhy were the companies given colors? ...and why did FedEx Services not receive a color?......I think it was given a metallic tint like platinum

Gerald Herring10/31/2014

John Wilkinson10/31/2014

John Wilkinson Was it only the revenue generators were given colors?

Deby Abbott Jolley10/31/2014

Deby Abbott Jolley Because Services was/is boring? 3 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk10/31/2014

John is correct. Only Divisions that produced products or services were given colors, although eventually Caliber Logistics was moved into Services, and a Tech Services component that provided outside MX and Repair services was also in FedEx Services. One of the Marketing themes was that multiple FedEx trucks/Vans could arrive to the same shipping dock each day, and Colors would help keep products from different companies from getting mixed up. 1 ·

FedEx Trivia QuizIn the early 90’s SIS had a new automation device built. It started out as a calculator sized device, where a customer could do simple things: push a few buttons and get a dispatch, order supplies, check to see if FedEx delivered to zip codes etc. Eventually about a 1000 were ordered. It was called COSMOS IIIc. Project was cancelled after the first order.a. Why was it cancelled? b. Who cancelled it? c. What was its codename and why was it called that?

David Hunt11/4/2014

David Hunt A. Because powership was being pushed out. B. Dennis Jones C. Hello Federal ... Not sure other than the commerical and it used a telephone line to dail in.

Jimmy Glenn Burk11/5/2014

David is correct. Initially the device was initially proposed at $50 each with just a few functions, but cost about $700 when rolled out. PC's were $2500 each, but continued to drop and were a little over $1,000 and were full functioned at rollout time; so DHJ decided to drop it and roll out the PCs. Jim Barksdale had said he wanted a device simple enough for his wife Sally to use...so it was codenamed the SallyB Edited ·

Ben Moore11/5/2014

Ben Moore I'm glad it didn't have to be simple enough for JLB to use. I recall he was the only person with a Mac for a long time.

ANSWERS

TRUE 1 Federal Express once looked at a wireless distribution system for dispatch that could also be used to transmit free movies at night to major cities; One of the ideas that came out of Jim Moore & the Radio Group

True 2. Federal Express once was a manufacturer of Vans. FedEx purchased Z-Vans, a manufacturer of tall vans.

True 3_When the 727’s were going to be grounded by the FAA for any night time flights over populated areas, FedEx co-developed silencers for the jets Hush Kits

TRUE 4- When 727’s were going to be grounded because they had exceeded the stress conditions for the life of the jet; FedEx bought a $2000 computer, and an $800K software program, and spent a million dollars to modify the computer program…to keep the 727 in the air The 727s had exceeded the weight limitations on the wings by flying freight vs passengers. The FAA had confidence in a certain stress application and told FedEx that if they would modify the program for every major component of each 727 aircraft, then they would certify the jets using that package.

False 5-Before FedEx Home Delivery was created by FedEx Ground, Federal Express successfully implement a home delivery only service using part time workers There was not a successful implementation due to the high costs of AGFS

TRUE 6- FedEx was part owner in a Rocket Launch business FEDEX SpaceTran

TRUE 7-FedEx has owned container ships & undersea fiber laying ships Thru FITC & subsidiary’s purchased, there were ships partially or fully owned for a time.

TRUE 8-One of Flying Tigers biggest customer bases was flying pigs & horses The Pilots hated flying those animals from S. America

FALSE 9-Flying Tigers did $1B in bulk freight shipping; when FedEx purchased them they were able to keep those customers. FedEx was only able to keep about 30% of that business. (But the main reason for purchasing Flying Tigers was that they had vested landing rights around the world, which passed to FedEx)

TRUE 10_FedEx once had stewardess’s Flying Tigers had a passenger service, mostly for military movements and they came with that purchase.

TRUE 11-FedEx once did it’s own printing Supposedly it was abandoned with talk of unionizing that area.

FALSE 12- Three Flying Tigers jets crashed just before FedEx took over that airline One Flying Tigers 747 crashed after the purchase but before Federal Express took over. Edited ·

Chris Bentley11/14/2014

Chris Bentley 4) only the 727s that were converted from passenger aircraft were affected, as they had smaller frame rails than the purpose built freighters. The manufacturers maximum weights on any aircraft were never exceeded - the intrepid W&B programmers made sure of that ;) And, the W&B programming was substantially altered to reduce the stresses on the converted 727s by adding additional checks for 'adjacent zones' with lower limits. 2 ·

From the fedex retiree site( www.ferc1.org ) FedEx Cell Phone Discounts: FedEx Retirees are NOT eligible for discounts with the FedEx approved cell phone vendors such as ATT, Verizon, etc. However, if you had a plan with one of the vendors at the time you retired from FedEx, then that vendor may continue to grant you those discounts moving forward. Keep in mind that this is a courtesy on their part and they could change it at any time. Update: The club has been been notified by several of our members that the cell phone vendors are no longer honoring the discounts for FedEx retirees. We do hope to work with FedEx Sourcing to try and get the discount reinstated but this will take time based on the timing of contractual agreements. Check back for further updates. Laurie's answers are correct. --- a. FedEx connected to the Internet via dial up until 1994 TRUE b. The request to connect directly to the Internet was turned down because it was too expensive and did nothing for the company. TRUE - The request was turned down, we did it anyway. It cost $5K a month to run a circuit to the closest internet node at the time, St. Louis c. Data Protection made the decision that every time you changed to a new page/URL on the browser, you had to log on again with your password TRUE - Data Protection at the time only did Mainframe security, and didn't know what the Internet was, so they decided that every time you went to a different server you had to sign in again to get access. Network Engineering ignored that decision. d. FEDUP was a site that FedEx endorsed False- Fedup was a site by a chicago courier, who seemed like he was a union organizer. It would come up as part of a search on FedEx and was pretty much anti-management.

Medicare claims they will change it each time I call. Meanwhile claims are going unpaid. One from May this year has been submitted and denied three times so far even after calls to Medicare. Also happened to a colleague who finally got it straightened out after multiple claims denied and multiple calls to Medicare and multiple not happy service providers. A mess!

Humana's Customer Service is great. We have Humana Gold PPO, which covers all the Medicare "Parts". Your monthly premium, over and above the funds deducted from you SS by Medicare, varies by State and County. Our 2015 Humana premium is $27 per person. Just a suggestion. 2 ·

FedEx Trivia Quiz

In the early 80’s the SuperHub was brought online to test. Of 25,000 packages tested over 95% of the packages went to the wrong locations(inside the hub). I had a background in microprocessors and was sent to find the problems.Additionally, about 25% of the sort controllers went bad every night. Pick from the following what the problems were with the Rapistan sort controllers which were based on Zilog micros:

a. There was a design flaw with the system

b. None of the mx people were trained to fix the systems

c. Being in the SuperHub was like being in an earthquake, all the boards vibrated out of their slots

d. The mx guys zapped every board due to static electricity

e. All the bad circuit boards were put back into inventory

Peter Dangerfield Like Carl, all of the above!

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/16/2014

Answers: b,c,d & e all happened. Although Mx people were initially trained on the night shift, by the time the SuperHub was turned on, all the night shift people had rotated to the day shift…and day shift were working the night shift, so no one on the night shift had training. In addition, most had never worked on microprocessors or computers, and no one knew where to find the manuals that were provided by Rapistan. 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/16/2014

The problem with the 90%+ miss-sorts was that no one ever read the manuals on how to use the system and were using the CLEAR key incorrectly. I watched the sort for 3 nights before my eyes caught a small display on the sort controller. There were the same numbers flashing all thru the sort. No one knew where any manuals were, so I contacted Rapistan and they sent me one. Turns out it was the code that the clear key was being hit by the person entering the zip codes. No one was expert at using a 10 key pad for data entry so the keyers would hit clear to clear out their entries and re-enter the zip code. Problem was that the system was designed to clear all packages that hadn’t started down the sort belt. There would be one package already keyed, waiting to enter the sort belt, one that was right at the keypad, and there could be another package right behind it, that a fast keyer could start keying on. So hitting clear had nothing to do with clearing out the current entry, it cleared out 2-3 packages at once…these packages would just go down the belt to some unknown, mis-keyed Phantom Zone.

Subject: FedEx Trivia Quiz

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/16/2014

FedEx Trivia QuizIn the middle 80’s Federal Express had an idea of using the satellites that they had installed and helping more poverty areas of the country with new jobs. The idea was to use a version of the zapmailers to transmit airbill images to a location like Kentucky coal mining towns and have them key in information at night and transmit the data back before sort was finished in Memphis.a. What was this project called? b. Why was it abandoned?

Dave Hansen12/16/2014

Dave Hansen ExpressStar One was what the bird was to be called. It was abandoned because the Challenger exploded and NASA cancelled all future commercial payloads.

Dave Hansen12/16/2014

Dave Hansen I believe that the satellite was sold to Hughes. The Varian HPA's (High Powered Amplifiers) were sold to Cylix Communications Corp and were used in their K-band project., Many people think that this project was Freds folly. In my opinion it was not. Had that bird gone up, even if the Zapmailer project failed, we would still be making money leasing time on the transponders (+ and -) on that satellite. 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/17/2014

This project was a subset of project REDS for remote revenue entry. One option was to provide more hours for station personnel and let them input data from airbills at night…but they weren’t good keyers Another option was to scan airbills with a modified zapmailer and transmit to a keying location. Same problems to coal mining areas, people can’t just be trained to key data correctly. Scan airbills and OCR as much data as possible was looked at, and just present data that couldn’t be resolved to a keyer. In the end, project REDS was cancelled due the project falling behind in the proposed schedule. Many years later, project GENESIS would put a high speed scanner in the stations, transmit to Memphis and translate/OCR the data.

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/19/2014

Answer: DADS, first scans sent wireless to the DEC PDP-11’s and then over SNA links to COSMOS. History: The story goes, that the Radio dept was told to NOT work on the project to send SuperTracker scans thru DADS. The CIO didn’t want conflicts in projects taking place, and wanted all efforts to make the Smartbase work. Working with MDI in Vancouver, Radio & the Hardware engineering group worked on it anyway, and that option was ready to go when IIB was ready to roll out. Initially Harry Dalton wanted to give a 10,000 supertracker order to HHP and 10,000 order to Norand and 1) see which performed the best, 2) to have competition and 3) also to have a secondary source. There wasn’t enough money to go around, so HHP got the SuperTracker contract for 10,000 units and Norand got the SmartBase & quad rack order. After rollout, but before the SmartBase software could be stabilized, the Comm Soft group under Dan Goss(and either Bill Strange or Kurt Wulff) put together a standard PC configuration called the PCBase which did the same thing and could control the quad racks. Eventually all the SmartBases were replaced with the PCBase configuration. 1 ·

FedEx Trivia QuizMaster Salesmen:

In the year before Zapmail shut down, the zapmail sales force was in the process of selling Zapmailer II’s which were smaller zapmail machines at the customer’s office. They offered an outright sale or a lease option. I don’t remember the exact number but it seems like they had placed a few thousand but had over 8,000 in inventory and sales had almost stopped. Most of these were dial up. Prices had been lowered, because there just wasn’t enough systems out there for customers could fax between each other, so most documents went to a Zapmailer I at the station to be delivered. In a planning meeting FWS made the decision that we were going to continue to offer the zapmailer II’s but only a leased line version, so that documents could be delivered faster and it would be a more premium option. Customer would pay for the leased line to the closest node, then 25 cents per page. We would continue that service until a Satellite based service could be added. So sales of dial up zapmailers would stop in one week.In that next week, over 8,000 zapmailers would be sold or leased. How did Bill Razzouk and the sales force do this?

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/11/2015

The sales message was not ‘fedex will stop selling dial up zapmailer 2’s, so you have to put in a leased line and pay for it’ The message was: ‘Price increase…we will no longer offer the entry level dial up zapmailer2, price is going up…so if you wanted to get in on the entry level cheap price…you better order now’ …..then 8,000 were sold/leased within 2 weeks The sales were moot after the challenger accident and after looking at other options, it was apparent that a cheaper alternative satellite offering could be done or launched, and the program was cancelled. 1 ·

He arrived in Memphis at 2828 Business Park, across from the Hub, just as an employee was walking to his car. The prisoner, now with police weapons took the employees keys, opened the trunk and ordered him to get in…Who was the employee? What happened to him?

lJimmy Glenn Burk My First Meeting with Ron : Around 1983 I was at the CAC and needed to connect some modems between the Tandems and COSMOS for test. I connected and needed to call Elaine Turner to activate so we could test the NPSI x.25 links. I had no phone, so I went to the office next door. It was a room with about 15 desks with a phone on each desk. There were only 3 people in the room. I went to an empty desk and picked up the phone….and everyone started looking at me funny. Ron came over and very sternly told me that I couldn’t use the phones,,,,the phones were for official business only and for emergencies if problems with the call centers arose. I looked around and said,,,,you are telling me that there are 13 phones not used here…and I can’t use one of them to make one call??? Ron, as serious as he could be…’yes…these phones are for emergencies only…’ I immediately said….’Who do you work for?’ He said…’I work for Winn Stephenson….’ I knew Winn’s phone number, I had previously worked for him one month a year before. I didn’t ask Ron, but immediately called Winn on Ron’s phones. I told him where I was, and asked ‘Can I use one of your 13 unused phones at the CAC???’ Winn, said ‘of course’…. And I said ’well ...will you tell your manager that I can use the phone’…and handed it to Ron. Ron had a short conversation with Winn and hung up. He then said, ‘ Mr. Burk, you can use any and all of our phones and desks anytime you want….can we get you some coffee…and how would you like it’…

a. Before Federal Express built it's own ground services division, FWS met with the CEO of UPS to offer them the opportunity to deliver express packages on behalf of FedEx

b. After initially starting service, Federal Express stopped using it's own aircraft and used passenger airlines for over a month to transport packages

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/21/2015

Answers:

a. TRUE Federal had hired several people from UPS and Michael Basch set up a meeting with the UPS CEO to discuss. UPS wasn't interested at all...thankfully

b. TRUE The first night about 7 Falcons came in with about 6 packages, and one of the packages was a Birthday present sent by FWS to someone. The company decided to rethink the cities they were going and also expand. Charlie Brandon led an ops research type effort to pick the cities and they added Rochester..a major site for IBM. Passenger airlines were used to transport packages until this new city structure was determined.

c. False Little Rock airport officials would not expand the airport facilities and improve them for a startup like Federal Express. On the other hand Federal was offered space on the Memphis airport facility to build a hub and airport bond money to build it, plus Hangars to house employees...to move here.

d. TRUE In the mid 90's when the Pilot Union (while contract was being negotiated) made several comments to the news about problems they forsaw of shipping packages for Christmas thru FedEx..and that they might not arrive on time, FedEx started making some agreements for the future. Half the pilot force was needed at the time to fly International routes so some routes were contracted to Europe and to South America so that is where the company looked first to find alternative transport. I'm not sure if these were ever actually used, but the agreements made were supposedly binding for a year or two. 1 ·

Answers above were pretty much correct:

a. What was the name of the company these jobs were outsourced to? SCB (Seltmann Cobb & Bryant)

b. What happened to the 90 employees? Only a few accepted the outsourcing offer from SCB; the others bid or were transferred to other open positions in the company.

c. What did this department do? Weather, messaging, Air Ops applications

d. What was the name of the Director over the group that was displaced? Steve Steilling ----------------- I got involved a year later. Steve had left the company. Chris Hjelm who was now the CIO of FedEx Express, commented that it was apparent working with Steve, that he was a dedicated professional who really was concerned and looked after his staff. Two years later, all the work transferred to SCB was terminated, and support/development moved back into FedEx in Linehaul.·

Jim Bentley And after DEC gave us 6-month delivery, we had the first 6 in 15 days. After they arrived and we called the local DEC office to Gen the operating system, they could not because they had never seen this system it was so new.. RTFM, and we did it ourselves! 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/28/2015

My DEC /DADS story: For a short time Jim Bentley had a Systems Service Package with the Dec PDP11/34 where we could call and ask systems questions. Calls were routed to a DEC call center in Colorado. We had a problem of random disc errors we couldn't figure out. It happened randomly and I put some debug code in the system, but couldn't locate the problem. I called DEC and went thru 3 layers of systems people who had no idea what I was talking about. They said they would refer the problem to a Higher Office. Not too long after this, while the problem was happening, the problem just stopped...as Jim was shuffling things in his office, which didn't have a lot of free space. It turned out that the modem, connecting the system to COSMOS was causing the disk errors when the modem was moved close to the disk drives. I called DEC back and wanted to let them know what the problem was and to close the ticket. The next month, I started receiving calls from DEC in Colorado and in Atlanta to refer their hard problems to me. They assumed that I knew what I was talking about, so I must be a DEC engineer and they just wanted to flip the problems to me. So it seems, I became the Higher Office...which I quickly shut down. I was eventually contacted by the District Atlanta office and offered a job, if I ever decided to leave Federal Express.... 2 ·

8 best retirement freebies(from Yahoo Finance)Senior discounts abound, making life in retirement a little more affordable. In some cases, though, older adults can get more than just a lower price — some goods and services that will appeal to retirees come free of charge. Here are eight great freebies that many retirees can enjoy. Some are available only for those who have reached a certain age. Others are accessible to people of all ages but can be especially beneficial to those living in retirement on a fixed income.Free tax preparation. The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help to all taxpayers with an emphasis on those age 60 and older. Volunteers, who are certified by the IRS, specialize in pension and other retirement-related tax issues. Use the TCE locator tool to find a site near you. And AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income taxpayers, especially those 60 and older, at more than 5,000 locations.Free preventive care. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 now requires health insurers to cover certain preventive care — ranging from flu shots to cholesterol screenings — without being subject to the policy's deductible or co-payments. Medicare beneficiaries can also get many preventive benefits without co-payments or deductibles. The list includes mammograms, screenings for cervical and colorectal cancer, pneumonia shots, and an annual wellness visit and personalized prevention plan. See Medicare's Preventive & Screening Services for a full list. You become eligible for Medicare at 65.Free prescription drugs. Several supermarket pharmacies including Harris Teeter, Meijer, PriceChopper and Publix offer select antibiotics, diabetes medications and other generic drugs for free. You might need to enroll in a pharmacy loyalty program to receive the free drugs. Pharmaceutical companies also offer free and low-cost drugs to low-income people without prescription-drug insurance. You can use RxAssist database to find free medication through drug companies' patient assistance programs.Free eye care. EyeCare America, which is a public service program of the American Academy of Opthamology, provides free eye exams and up to one year of care for any disease diagnosed during that exam for those who are 65 and older and haven't seen an eye doctor in three or more years. Visit EyeCareAmerica.org for program guidelines and to see if you qualify.Free education. About 60% of accredited, degree-granting institutions offer tuition waivers for older adults, according to an American Council on Education study. In fact, several states have laws requiring state-supported institutes of higher learning to waive tuition for older residents (usually age 60 or 65 and older). Some tuition-waiver programs allow credit to be earned for the course, while others only allow the course to be audited.Free museum admission. Most museums offer senior discounts for admission, but a few actually let older adults visit for free on certain days. For example, the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City gives people 65 and older free admission the first Monday of every month. Several museums offer free admission one day a month to residents of the city, county or state where they are located. For example, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta offers free admission for Fulton County, Ga., residents the first Saturday of each month and the Art Institute of Chicago lets Illinois residents visit for free on Thursday evenings. And Bank of America cardholders can gain free admission to more than 150 museums on the first full weekend of every month.Free state park admission. Several state park systems — among them Maryland, New Hampshire, New York and Texas — offer older adults free admission or a free annual pass. Some passes require a small processing fee, and some state sites are not included in the admission-fee waiver. See Also: The Cheapest Places You'll Want to RetireFree transportation. Some localities and states let older adults ride for free on public transportation. For example, the Pennsylvania Free Transit Program allows people 65 years and older to ride bus, trolley and rapid-transit lines for free with a senior citizen transit identification card (which also is free). Some places, such as Orange County, Calif., offer free community transit programs that help older adults get to select locations.

Seniors can buy a National Parks Pass for $10 good for your lifetime, which gets you entry into many National Parks and Recreation centers. This saved me over $50 on my last trip to Arizona. You only need one per vehicle, but it is good to go ahead and buy your spouse one, since they aren't transferrable. If in Memphis you can get a Sr. Pass in Brownsville TN, about 20-25 minutes north east of memphis, if you don't want to order thru the mail. http://store.usgs.gov/pass/senior.html America the Beautiful - National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass store.usgs.gov 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/14/2015

DADS is the correct answer. Typically 80%+ of the couriers received their dispatches by finding a phone and calling the station, which meant you had to have lots of people answering the phones. About 20% were given to the courier whenever he contacted the dispatcher. Even then only basic info in an 8 second burst was given to the courier, basically the street address and customer. When DADS was installed, all the people answering the phone were mostly put on other tasks. Dispatches could get from Customer service to the station in 30 seconds or less, and be in the terminal in the van, a few seconds after the dispatcher chose the route. The system was originally meant to go into the top 30 cities, but eventually went almost everywhere. Edited · 1 ·

Why Federal Express became FedEx

Jim McBryde2/19/2015

Jim McBryde When i started back in tracing, there were two words we were not allowed to use - fedex and hub. We had to use the entire name federal express and we had to refer to the hub as our sorting facility. I remember going to the "hub" auditorium for the announcement of the name change to "fedex". It took awhile to get used to using both as we had been so indoctorated not to use either. 1 ·

FedEx Trivia QuizHow did this Customer Automation device communicate with the mainframe to transfer Billing information? And who was the Manager over Production control that handled this, and Cosmos IIa device support?

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/23/2015

Raymond Rider Lemme see if I can guess this! It dialed up on modem banks connected to Tandem host. This was before my time! James W Jim LeMaster The users sent in the tapes & a "printout" of the little paper. Edited ·

Steven Swanberg2/23/2015

Steven Swanberg No it wasn't Jimmy! This was the famous "Communicating Meter" which replaced couriers picking up those little answering-machine sized Epson cassette tapes with pickups at large customer sites. In fact, when we brought the first 7 Communicating Meters located in California online dialing into the Tandem host (which did Async communication better than IBM Front End Processors) . . . why did we get a call from a Director in Revenue telling us to "shut down those damned meters"? (HInt, it had to do with our policy of never billing wihtout providing P.O.D. Proof Of Delivery) 1 ·

Jim McBryde2/23/2015

Jim McBryde There were receipts and a casette. It was estimated at that time that only about 30% were ever actually billed. Randy jacobs managed it. They were stacked up everywhere. I think the department was called pipeline. 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/24/2015

Answers were mostly correct: micro-cassettes were shipped to memphis, and much of the billing was missed. I believe it was Randy Jacobs, who reported to Jimmy Sowell at the time that managed this; and Cosmos IIa devices. 1 ·

Chris Apalodimas2/25/2015

Chris Apalodimas Jimmy, you just described the original 'Pipeline' process for the cassettes coming into memphis & getting uploaded into billing. I wrote the procedures for the couriers to put one copy in an Overnight Letter and send to MEM. I believe they used to keep the paper tape as backup. The original rollout of the 'Epson Meters' was about 50 I belive, the program was run by Craig Bell from Sales. On the first go-round, the Sales Exec would use a password and enter the sales rates into the machine. Also, they would only do so AFTER receiving a check from the customer!! They would just ship until the money ran out ! We tested the first two at Holiday Inn and Otis Elevator.

Marcie Littles Moss April 12, 1978 at $24.00 per share Don Rose Employee Stock Purchase at $20.40 per share (15% discount) I believe. Jim Bentley Hmmmm, I thought the unit price was $20. And employee price was $17. With a limit of 200 shares per employee. Don Rose Jim, the limit was 1500 shares, but they kept the offer open well past the IPO date and it was so over subscribed that those who requested (and paid for) 1500 shares ended up with 333 shares and a refund from the balance of their payment. Don Rose I still blame Tucker Taylor for me not being wealthy, because he was the person that was adament about keeping the offer open.

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/25/2015

My cousin shared the following from a Karen Bryant, that looked like good advice for retirees & anyone: ____________________ ATTORNEY'S ADVICE - NO CHARGERead this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all take some of his advice! A corporate attorney sent the following out to the employees in his company:1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put 'PHOTO ID REQUIRED.'2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the 'For' line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have It printed, anyone can get it.4. Place the contents of your wallet on photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place.I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a Name, address, Social Security number, credit cards..Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have firsthand knowledge because my wallet was stolen last month. Within a week, the thieves ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information online, and more. But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know:5. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.6.. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one). But here's what is perhaps most important of all: (I never even thought to do this.)7. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.by the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the theft, all the damage had been done. There are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I knew about before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks. Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your wallet, if it has been stolen:1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-62851-800-525-62852.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742 1-888-397-37423.) Trans Union : 1-800-680 7289 1-800-680 72894.) Social Security Administration (fraud line):1-800-269-0271 1-800-269-0271We pass along jokes on the Internet; we pass along just about everything. If you are willing to pass this information along, it could really help someone that you care about.

Subject: Some interesting comments about Retired Life(from the Early Retirement Org forum)........JimmyB ---- ...

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/27/2015

Some interesting comments about Retired Life(from the Early Retirement Org forum)........JimmyB ---------------------------------------------------------------- One month into ER, I posted the three things that most surprised me. I’ve now updated that list and expanded the items to five:5. I’ve come to realize that I spent the last few years at work sleep deprived, and a full night’s sleep (at least eight hours for me) is one of the most crucial parts of living a healthy, well-balanced life. I was as productive as ever at work with less sleep, but I was constantly irritable. I chalked that up at the time to some of the challenging personalities I had to deal with, but I now think it was more about me -- if I’d had enough sleep, it would have been like water off a duck’s back. Maybe.4. I now understand why relatively few end up working part time in retirement, despite what they tell pollsters before they retire. Once you’ve tasted the freedom that comes from having full control of your life and no work-related stress, it’s very hard to give it up. Although I’ve heard retired friends say they’re seeking opportunities to do “meaningful” work of some sort, they want it entirely on their own terms. Not surprisingly, there aren’t many of those unicorns around. And as previous threads here have made clear, volunteer work can be as frustrating as regular work, without the financial compensation.3. Related to the above, if things get tight financially, I think it’s more likely that I’ll economize further rather than try to earn new income. I've stopped worrying too much about it, since it appears I can live on less than I originally estimated, barring unplanned major expenses.2. I’m never bored. Ever. It's very easy for me to stay mentally engaged, and being an introvert (like most of us here), I haven’t even had to ramp up my socializing much.1. Time goes by much quicker than pre-ER. That’s why focusing my energies is an important part of making the most of each day. ---------------------- 3 weeks into ER and my surprises are: 1. How little I miss work. 2. How rest deprived I have been for years. 3. How easily I can fill my days. 4. How quickly the week goes by. 5. How little I am interested in making time commitments that don't align with unstructured days.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/2/2015

Answer: a. Bruce Lindow b. Bruce interfaced a flash memory board into the SuperTracker, which gave it much more memory and faster speeds. The alternative to the project Bruce initiated was for FedEx to spend at least $70M on new supertrackers and quadracks, which still had no laser scanner or other improvements, just more memory. It was one of the key projects that came out of Bruce's group which included designing and manufacturing all new DADS computers in the vans at about 1/3 the price, replacing the CommController (connected DEC computer to wireless network) which cost $12K for one that cost about $2K, and a redesign and rebuild years later of a SuperTracker with Laser scanning, 6 megs of memory, Infrared communications and other improvements. 2 ·

Bruce Lindow3/3/2015

Bruce Lindow what Jimmy wrote is only part of the answer.

Bruce Lindow3/3/2015

Bruce Lindow a. was about a $10M project without counting internal manpower. b. was about $40M to $50M for DADS terminals and about $50K for the DADS commController, along with $55M for the EST with scanner. Just these projects totaled over $100M. In addition to the nig ticket items, there wwere also small pieces that amounted to several million dollars. To get these sized projects sucessfully approved for money and internal manpower and upper management support requires a very strong push and support by two great executives, Jimmy Burk and Winn Stephenson to move the ideas upward in a convincing way. There part was as critical as the engineering design, testing, and manufacturer.
