Fedex Employees who throw the mailers away. You just threw away $100/$200 if married. Don't forget to fill out the WBA again this year for the additional $100/$200 if you and the spouse complete it. Only takes 10 minutes. If you don't know the answer leave it blank. It still counts as long as you complete it. See #2 on the picture. Why not do it now, you're reading this, your online. Some I tagged no longer work there but know folks who do

Buddy Johnson10/18/2015

Buddy Johnson SUPER

Kathy Jones Crockett10/18/2015

Kathy Jones Crockett I don't know , but I have the pictures of the day when Barksdale and others such Zapmail down, in Zap Control.... For many of us that worked hard to make it work it sure was a hard day!!!!! But at least we got some sleep the following week! 2 ·

Dan Elliot10/18/2015

Dan Elliot Yep, it was a product before it's time...

Kathy Jones Crockett10/18/2015

Kathy Jones Crockett I don't believe that, I think the shuttle disaster killed Zapmail, if we had been able to get the Satellite in space which was canceled and off ATT, land line cost, it would have made it.Land line cost was far to high per page ....THen you had a vp of Marketing and could not sell it!!!!! 1 ·

Dan Elliot10/18/2015

Dan Elliot Well that's true too... but since most of our biggest customers cost us more in phone line charges than we made from them, something had to change for it to be profitable...

Kathy Jones Crockett10/18/2015

Kathy Jones Crockett Agree too, however, when you have a VP that tells the world one thing and then can't meet it he retreated! The Customer (I talked to them daily) would have gladly paid to keep the service.... He simply had no idea to market it! 1 ·

Debora Williams Waller10/18/2015

Debora Williams Waller As I recall the land lines would drop the transmission before the lengthy documents would complete. That was so frustrating to Zap Central, customers and the field. We just couldn't last with that type service. A sad day indeed.

Dave Hansen10/18/2015

Dave Hansen I totally agree with Kathy Jones Crockett. Had the challenger not blown up, satellite "Express Star 1" would have gone up on the next mission. Fedex had purchased a 32 channel (16 w/ positive and negative polarity) satellite from Hughes. Fedex only needed 3 of those channels. 2 years later came the proliferation of cable TV. We would be swimming in money.

Dave Hansen10/18/2015

Dave Hansen As to what became of the Tandems, I can tell you. I was hired away from RCA/Cylix Communications because of them. They were used for Supr, ECCO and SELCT. When I started in 94 people told me I was crazy for taking the job cause DJ hated Tandem and that Tandem was going away. Tandem way outlasted DJ. They were finally unplugged in 2014 when CCII for Customs Clearance.(unix based) was finally perfected. 2 ·

Joe Cutrell10/18/2015

Joe Cutrell acoustic upload via phone

Jimmy Glenn Burk10/18/2015

Joe is correct. SIS decided to put a speaker on the phone, not exactly knowing how it would work...but they said it only cost $5 extra. The end goal was to capture scans, especially POD's for couriers who didn't have DADS wireless units. The courier would scan the package, find a phone somewhere, dial an 800 number and hold the ST up to the phone and theorectially transmit data. Some scans got thru, some did not.

Peggy Dawson Black10/23/2015

Peggy Dawson Black What I've learned so far is that not only can we not use Baptist Hospitals (not new) but now any doctor affiliated with Baptist is excluded under the new plan option. This narrows the field of doctors significantly ranging from internists to oncology to surgeons regardless of what other hospitals they have privileges at.

Laura Ladd Beard10/23/2015

Laura Ladd Beard Peggy i got a letter a few weeks ago from Baptist Medical Group. It indicated that if you have a Cigna plan other then LocalPlus, you can continue to see your Baptist Medical Group physician. It said if you are a FedEx employee, you need to choose Cigna Open Access Plan. Not sure if this applies to retirees or if is related to what you mentioned above.

Walking the Haunted HallsI've been back to the WTC twice since I retired about 7+ years ago. Last year and this year for their Halloween thing for kids. The employees do an excellent job for the children with lots of candy and several Haunted Houses. As I walked the halls, I saw about 4-5 people I knew, and I looked at nameplates on the offices and cubicles as I walked with Capt America, Princess Rapunzel & Princess Sofia the First.I only could recognize a few names in the 100+ namplates I looked at. With the last buyout, I guess the mantle has changed and there are lots of new & younger blood walking these haunted halls. It was a Blast being there again. I can only hope that this new age of Fedxr's can have half the fun we had 20+ years ago.

Laura Ladd Beard Gary did you get this email a few weeks ago? FedEx Pre-65 Retiree Health Participants On Tuesday, November 10th, come hear about the upcoming 2016 Pre-65 Retiree Health participants changes. Cigna in conjunction with FedEx Benefits will provide an overview of the new options and host a Q&A session -- Colonial Country Club, Terrace Room, 2736 Countrywood Parkway, Cordova, TN. This event is also open to non-members. Please register to attend by November 4th. To register, go to the FERC website at www.ferc1.org. In 2016, FedEx continues to offer the Pre-65 Retiree Consumer Medical Plan Options with a few changes. One of those changes is a new limited-provider network option available in some areas through Cigna. These new options, called Retiree Consumer Choice Select and Retiree Consumer Premier Select, offer fewer providers (such as doctors, hospitals, and labs) but feature lower in-network deductibles. Keep in mind that the 2016 Pre-65 Retiree Health Enrollment period will be November 6th thru November 19th. Your enrollment guide should arrive prior to this date. You can also access it online at https://fedex.ehr.com/ once it becomes available. Questions should be directed to the FedEx Benefits Center at 1-800-888-5622. FedEx Retiree Club ferc1.org 1 ·

Phil Pickens11/3/2015

With the constant increases in the annual cost of medical healthcare insurance everyone is looking for ways to make the increase easier to absorb. You may want to consider dropping the dental and vision coverage and look at other ways to reduce the cost of dental and vision. Total costs for Dental and Vision for 2016 is 1788.00 per year for retiree and spouse. Our dental plan covers general cleaning but beyond that there is 100.00 deductible plus percentage coverage at in network costs, max benefit is 2000.00 per year, so if your dentist is out of network it will cost even more.Cigna and Aetna (as well as other companies) offer discount cards for in network coverage but not out of network coverage for dental care. These discount plans cost between 100.00 and 200.00 per year for individual and family coverage. The discounts range 15% to 60% depending on the procedure. As for vision it would be wise to look at stores like Costco, Sam's Clubs, Walmart and other large discount stores. I was in Costco last week and looked at their frames, most of their frames costs between 39.00 and 59.00 plus all their lens are discounted also. I was talking to one of their opticians and told him I usually spend around 200.00 for glasses using my Davis Vision, he said no way there. Considering the costs for the annual premium for 2016 is 468.00, I see a big savings by dropping vision.

Dany Hsch11/3/2015

Dany Hsch Great ideas ! I think my dentist has always been out of network

Richard Maingault11/3/2015

Richard Maingault I dropped dental and vision years ago. I had been taking good care of my death, so I did not have any expensive issues. Saved over time. I bought the Dental Discount plan and it works well. 180.00 for two and on most of my dental work I have saved 60%. Highly recommend the dental discount plan. 2 ·

from Bill Bahr: Started in Feb 1973 as employee 256. Was a recruiter / HR geek who hired lots of FedEx's new city managers and some Memphis team members, including Tommy Bullion! Great times.

Jimmy Glenn Burk11/5/2015

Bill Bahr family: My friend Tommy Bullion turned me on to this FedEx Legends website and I'd like to ask you to add my info when you have the time. I had just turned 22 years old and was hired by H. Gene Anderson while FedEx still had its Little Rock Airmotive location in late Jan / early Feb of 1973, just prior to FedEx's move from Little Rock to Memphis. I was employee 256 and spent the vast majority of 1973 on the road, interviewing / recruiting staff (city managers, sales people, drivers, etc.) in places like Rochester, Newark, St. Louis, LA, etc. In 1973 I also convinced Tommy to come in for an interview, and the rest is history. In 1974 I was also ask to help with recruiting / staffing up the Memphis operations, hiring mechanics, admins, Hub staff, etc. but still traveled extensively as well to help with the ramp up of the first 25 cities. I left FedEx in August 1974 for what I thought was a better opportunity overseas, but that deal fell through. I was actually planning to return to FedEx until I met my sweet wife and decided that Houston was a better place for me to be. 39 years later we are still in love and still in Houston, so it did really turn out to be a better deal !! I've attached a photo of me, my wife and our 5 kids. I am still working as an HR consultant, and also have my own offshore charter fishing business. -- Bill Bahr Edited · 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk11/10/2015

a. After the last Iraq war, U.S. airlines were not allowed to fly into Iraq to deliver packages. How did FedEx get packages into that country for the military? U.S. Airlines weren't allowed to fly into the country but foreign airlines could. The freight was transferred to Russian and other private companies who could legally land there.

b. FedEx could get shipments into countries for the military in days, while it took the military weeks and months. What was the military doing which caused so many delays? They would ship each order on a pallet...and the planes didn't leave until there were enough pallets on the cargo jet....thus delays

c. In the 1st Iraq war, the Telecom department got a call from Jim Barksdale to fix something in Saudi Arabia. What did he want fixed? a teletype used by the military

d. In both the 1st and 2nd Iraq wars, what did FedEx do to help U.S. efforts in any way they could? FedEx like other airlines provide aircraft to the military by contract. They are part of CRAF(Civil Reserve Air Fleet) FedEx took every aircraft it could and positioned them so that the military could used them asap. Even on weekends, international aircraft would be flown to staging areas for and requested use by the military.

Medicare Planning Info...just for you who are still to go on Medicare...My wife goes on Medicare one month earlier than me, on March 1st. About 4 months before her 65th birthday she received her Medicare card, and was automatically signed up for Part A and Part B because she is taking Social Security checks. On the back of the card and information page, there is an opt out card to fill out if you don't want to take Part B (you wouldn't take and pay for Part B if you are still being covered by some other insurance). The information packet said that the premiums for part B would be deducted from the social security check. If there weren't enough funds to cover the payments, you would get a bill every 3 months.I signed us both up for an account on www.medicare.oneexchange.com to start looking at available supplement/medigap policies and drug plans. I wasn't able to access anything for her or me, looks like maybe you have to do this 3 months before your birthday.

Can't sign them up for part a or part b. The spouse could get part A but would have to pay for it, and it is $400-500 a month, I think.I did get my OneExchange booklet today, for my wife. It doesn't give info on how to get the $85/month but said we would get that info later.

Peter Dangerfield11/24/2015

Peter Dangerfield Heads up on the $85 / mo you have to sign up twice for it in 120 days or loose it. I signed up with FDX but not CIGNA so I'm out of luck. Complained about it but no forgiveness.

Don Rose11/24/2015

Don Rose Pete, I didn't find out about the $85 until a month ago. They told me I was SOL because of the 120 days. I was unaware it was even available until recently. They said it was spelled out in the benefits book. I told them I had not received nor seen a benefits book since I retired. Bottom line...SOL!

Peter Dangerfield11/24/2015

Peter Dangerfield Don I think they hide it on purpose! 😬 I received so much material before and after the buyout I missed reading that step. When I complained to Benefits they opened a case but gave no forgiveness even though they agreed I had signed up with FDX in time. Sad it's double jeopardy. I also ran into mind blowing incompetence with my wife and sons Medical renewal, must have made twenty phone calls between FDX and CIGNA to get a card issued it took over three months to correct. 1 ·

Just an observation, for history note: Both Dave & Jim were strong advocates that we didn't need to go the Unix/C smaller server route, almost everything could and should be done on the mainframe. They were somewhat vocal opponents to the DHJ direction to have alternative platforms, not just the IBM mainframe. JET was also vocal against deploying customer automation with applications at the customer location. He pushed to use dumb terminals that dialed into the mainframe with all apps on the mainframe. They were missed, when they departed.

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/10/2015

Cosmos squared was the system which was to follow COSMOS. COSMOS provided Customer Service, Dispatch, and Tracking of Packages. COSMOS Squared would provide proactive tracking. Using all the scans including CONS, this app would determine where the package was and was it on the correct route to schedule to get to the destination. If not, it would alert OPS to potential service failures. I think it mostly faded as JET departed, and Chronos took such a large part of the IT budget.

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/17/2015

Some things Jimmy did: 1. home phone for $2/month we use our cell phones most of the time, but needed a home line to open the gate in our community. I didn't want to pay $36/month for at&t home line. I bought an OBI100 for $45, plugged into my home phone, and internet router. Then set up an account on Anveo for $2 a month. Now I have a home line. If internet is down, it emails voice messages to you. So, when I go on vacation, I just unplug it, and get my phone voice mails automatically 2. Cable I decided to get off cable; so ordered Netflix & Amazon Prime for streaming services for $17/month total. Then I called to cancel my cable..but they dropped the price $30/month for a year, then did it again, so I'll keep it a while. 3. Food Spend more money eating out...but trying hard to eat healthy. 4. Charlotte Benton Hieronymus Medicare pays...my husband only pays a $25 copay for his checkup each year. Haven't had to fill a prescription so not sure what or if they pay anything on that. 1 ·

Charlotte Benton Hieronymus1/1/2016

Charlotte Benton Hieronymus And, he doesn't have diabetes!

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/1/2016

"Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, does not generally cover routine eye exams for eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, Medicare Part B will cover an annual eye exam every 12 months if you have diabetes or are at high risk for glaucoma."

Charlotte Benton Hieronymus1/1/2016

Charlotte Benton Hieronymus Jimmy...my husband has been on Medicare for 3 years and all he has paid for his routine eye exam is $25. He does not have diabetes nor is he high risk for glaucoma. If what you say is true then I'm not sure how all he has paid is $25.

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/1/2016

It's great he is getting it covered. I checked with my sister who works for an Optometrist and works with the insurance companies and she relayed that they only get reimbursed from Medicare if you have diabetes or are high risk. I think she also said there is a $25 copay for the test, otherwise they don't get re-imbursed thru medicare.

Charlotte Benton Hieronymus1/1/2016

Charlotte Benton Hieronymus I agree it is great. He pays $25 for a copay but it is for the entire exam...not just for a test.

Peggy is correct about Harry's Passion A Harry story..... Harry could be blunt, very blunt...and very funny at the same time. When large customers were visiting Corporate many times Harry & I would be there to give presentations on various things. On one occasion the company was hosting a lunch for a large Fishing supply company. I gave a presentation on DADS and Harry on COSMOS IIb. When Harry finished his presentation he said something like.... "Personally I want to state that you are a great company with great products and I use you all the time. "But....I have to say...you did one of the most Stupid things possible when you discontinued the fly fishing bag model BR549 ...it was a great bag, and you replaced it with something inferior.....but I still love your company. " so in a few words Harry said they were both Great...and Stupid They took it well. The next day or so, Harry received a FedEx delivery which contained the praised fly fishing bag that had been discontinued...they found one and FedEx'd it to him.

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/31/2015

I am still researching Medicare supplement, dental, drug & vision options for my wife Stephanie who goes off FedEx Insurance a month before I do. Just made these notes to share, still not thru investigating but hopefully by end of next week it will be over. If you have other tidbits just post.-------------- Dental: There are about 4 dental plans offered thru OneExchange online. I believe they can offer other plans if you ask. They range in price from about $18 to $49 per month. Our dentist said they would take any insurance, but several are difficult to work with, and some have longer waiting periods before you can do anything but a cleaning. Some have you wait 6 months, some a year. Most of the dental plans pay out a max of $1,000 a year, and there were some that paid a max of $1500.There is a benefit from having a plan in that some of the crowns and other work are 'written down'. A $1200 crown might be $ 1075 base price with insurance.Delta Dental & Delta Dental Premier were mentioned as ones that are easy to work with, with Metlife following them. There are plans out there that are a type of HMO and many dentists won't take that insurance, so you need to check if your dentist is In Network.Vision:There is one plan in OneExchange(in Tennessee) that is offered which is VSP Choice Plan for $168 a year. Which gets you an eye exam and a pair of glasses. The Optomerist said that there is a VSP Premier Plan which is better, which I am researching. Also, if you are diabetic, you get a full eye exam once a year on Medicare versus a separate Vision insurance Plan. The vision insurance doesn't have to be purchased like medicare supplements once a year. If you've had your exam and got your glasses, you can wait and sign up later for that insurance. You can sign up 30 days before you need to do another eye exam. Supposedly we may be able to get private vision ins from Eye Med or even Davis vision, which I will check out.Medicare:Many doctors won't take new patients on Medicare. So be sure you have a primary doctor and any specialists you might need that you have used before. I went and got a heart check up from a specialist, because two of my brothers had heart attacks...I wanted to make sure I was on someone's patient list.Medicare Advantage: M/A is much cheaper than a supplement and can be a great benefit for those who can't or don't want to pay for a supplement. The negative is that many doctors won't take you as a patient, and you are in a type of HMO, and they choose your doctor and hospital. Yet it is much less expensive.

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/1/2016

Another tidbit from a very good friend who represents United HealthCare and AARP about a benefit of AARP Supplement Plans "Another point with AARP --- a supplement policy holder can SWITCH plans (within AARP) at any time with no health questions asked. So, for instance, someone who is paying for a Plan F maybe has a couple of financial misfortunes, and needs to go to a lower cost plan. (If you were with any other company, you'd have to submit to underwriting which could disqualify you or put you into a higher risk level and thus at a higher premium.) With ours, you just call in; tell the operator you want to switch to a lower cost plan; she asks you no questions; she just makes the switch; and your new plan takes effect at the first of the following month. Later, if you want to switch BACK to the better plan, just call in -- again --- no questions asked. "

Tommy Johnson1/1/2016

Tommy Johnson I have just started using Delta Dental. They seem easy to deal with so far. I can't offer anything on any of the other. I use the VA for medical and Vision. VA in my area is pretty good. They teamed up with the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Something that is little known about the VA is that if you are a veteran or spouse of a veteran they will pay quite a bit for in home health care of needed. They really don't advertise it but it is there. I wish I had known about this when my mother was bedridden with cancer.

FYI and Heads Up...I took the buyout 2 years ago (Dec 2013) but not old enough to be 'retired' or draw upon my retirement.I moved my 401K funds out of Vanguard to consolidate and manage together with other financial investments shortly thereafter. But still have my active Vanguard account.About 15 minutes ago, I received an email from Vanguard stating that my account had been de-activated due to exceeding the limit of login attempts.I RARELY log into this account, so SOMEONE has my information and knew I had a Vanguard account...I have taken extra measures to change my password, add the feature of not allowing other devices than my own computer, etc...but wanted to give others a heads up.Somehow, In my mind, I believe this to be information compromised from either Vanguard or Fedex...Not sure who to contact on the FedEx side since I'm not officially a retiree...any suggestions?

Cross posting excellent comments from Irene's facebook page, that I thought relevant to this Facebook Group.Irene Williams:Just an observation, not a complaint, but......I thought retiring puts folks on a fixed income. "Fixed" is a misnomer. Medicare deduction (which is mandatory) has increased. FedEx informed me that tax rates for 2016 have changed and my retirement check may not be the same amount as it was in 2015. (Tax rates rarely go down). I wonder how the rest of the entitled folks may feel about a declining fixed incomeComments:Philly Herlein Rains: I know exactly how you feel. No increase to our SS this year, but everything else is going up. Welcome to your Golden Years.Richard Maingault: Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I took the very first buyout way back, and I can tell you it only gets worse. Taxes and insurance is eating me aliveMaryJo Fiveash Clark: I have noticed that many people are struggling with retirement. I have determined that I will probably be working into my 70's. Hopefully there will be opportunities to some sort of life enjoyments...............Linda Graham: Nailed it!Julia Young: We don't like it, but we are use to it!!

History Trivia tidbit(probably only a few know this answer, but an interesting story....)Name this company that FedEx telecom did a lot of work with in the 1980's....The company was well known for making equipment that competed with AT&T.It decided to get into the computer making business and build Unix computers. It bid on a $115M dollar contract to furnish hundreds of Unix servers to Social Security. When this company did the demo of the equipment it performed well, and there was one tiny box that had a continuously flashing led. When the SS reviewers saw the light, they asked what that was and were told that the bid requested encryption of all data...so when the light was flashing...the computer was encrypting data. This company won the contract and started supplying servers. they also hired the people from the social security that were the decision makers on giving them the contract.Later there was an investigation and it was discovered that their computer had not worked at all when the demo was made. They had put a DEC computer in their box and demo'd that. The flashing light was in fact just a flashing lite, with no encryption. And hiring the people who gave the company the award, was not cool. People went to jail.We still continued to do business with them, they made a fine product. Who was this company?

I can remember coming to work and having to run into the building before the hookers would try to approach you. Anyone know why got two 1099-R forms this year?

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/20/2016

I received two also, and looked up this possible explanation: ----------------------------- If this is for a pension account and you have retired or separated from the company holding the retirement account and the distribution is being reported on a form 1099-R, in the year you are 59 1/2 you will receive two form 1099-R's. One for the income received prior to age 59 1/2, usually with a distribution code of 1 or 2 in box 7. One form 1099-R for after you have reached 59 1/2, usually with a distribution code of 7 in box 7 of the form 1099-R. Distribution code 1 is stating Early distribution, no known exception Distribution code 2 is stating Early distribution, exception applies Distribution code 7 is stating Normal distribution Edited ·

Mike McNeer1/20/2016

Mike McNeer I have been past 59 1/2 for awhile. The total of the two 1099's add up to what my yearly income is. The only different this year was I went on Medicare in June.

Laura Ladd Beard1/20/2016

Laura Ladd Beard Good question. I got two, as well. Wasn't 59 1/2 this year nor did I go on Medicare.

Subject: Some Medicare tidbits, for those who haven't gone thru the process yet.

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/21/2016

Some Medicare tidbits, for those who haven't gone thru the process yet.Did the medicare supplement, dental, drug and vision yesterday thru oneExchange.Took almost two hours to do both myself and Stephanie. 75% of that time was listening to recorded legal messages about each individual policy. oneExchange was very very helpful, and spent time going thru my drug formulary to get the best prices for us.Vision: you can sign up for a vision plan anytime if you want it. It is about $168 per person and basically covers once a year exam and a pair of glasses. So they advised to just wait a month before you need an exam and then sign up for a VSP. If you are high risk, you can get a free eye exam yearly thru Medicare part B.Dental: Dental plans cost about $30+ a person or around $360 a year. The max payout is about $1000 per year. It does seem to get you some discounts on crowns, but at the payout, you might get 1/2 of one crown per year. Most plans have a waiting period of 6 months before paying out for dental work except for cleaning.Drugs If you put your drug list in the oneExchange system, they have other tools available to compare costs etc. Most drug plans have a deductible of $360 I think, but some plans also waive the deductible if you are purchasing generic drugs. Generic drugs can sometimes cost $0 for a 3 month plan if you are buying generic.$85 dollar a month Health Reimbursement When oneExchange sets up your medigap supplement, dental, vision, drug plans some of the plans require a month payment then either by visa, mastercard or check draft. you can get any of these plans or none of them. they also set a flag that the plan you got is eligible for reimbursement from you FedEx credit, if you have one of those. You receive a packet on how to activate the re-imbursement to automatically deposit the $85 per month into your checking, or to apply it to one of your plans monthly,a few weeks before you Medicare date.

Daria Faye Ellis1/21/2016

Daria Faye Ellis Thanks for sharing

Peter Dangerfield1/21/2016

Peter Dangerfield Heads up Jimmy make sure you claim the $85/month correctly it's a two step process. I failed to do step two and lost it forever there is no recovery after the time period. 😡 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/21/2016

Pete, what are the two steps? You only get the packet 2-3 weeks from your cutoff date, which is really a short amount of time.

Peter Dangerfield1/21/2016

Peter Dangerfield Hopefully they have changed the process. I signed up with HR and failed to confirm with CIGNA so it was denied. I call HR who agreed I had requested it but would not make an exception. They must have MBO's to reduce retiree costs! 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/24/2016

Other Medicare Tidbits If you go onto OneExchange to see what options are for medigap plans and drug plans, one medigap plan that is not shown that is available is AARP. It costs a few dollars more than some of the plans, but you get a 5% discount off the plans if both employee and spouse are on aarp. I also received strong recommendations for Blue Cross Blue Shield of TN and Farmer's Bureau for easy to use plans in the state of Tennessee.

Dan Elliot1/24/2016

Dan Elliot Just curious as to which dental plan you choose...

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/24/2016

I haven't got one yet, but my wife got Renaissance plan. Others I talked to got Humana plan. Delta Dental was highly recommended as being easy to work with, but wasn't offered thru OneExchange. I think getting an eye plan or dental plan is only marginally economical. We primarily got one in order to get some discounts on more expensive work or contacts, versus paying for it as an individual. 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/27/2016

These are the Medigap plans listed for TN on OneExchange: Blue Cross Blue Shield $148/month Humana $153/mo Aetna $164/mo AARP -you have to call oneExchange but it is offered thru them Edited ·

FedEx Trivia

True or False Answer any that you can..........

.1. Once a customer called for a pickup, and the courier arrived for the package before they got off the phone.

2. At times the call center could answer the phone before the first ring.

3. If a customers phone call wasn't answered in 20 seconds and they dropped off, this was called an Dropped Call

4. Federal Express bought Flying Tigers to increase International Freight business.

5. At one time, Federal Express spent tens of millions to rent private aircrat to deliver freight that couldn't get out of the Hub

6. In the late 90's Federal Express did unconditional leases for aircraft and pilots to fly International routes, that were not cancellable.

7. Up until the late 90's Customer Service agents could themselves authorize doing things to help customers whose packages didn't arrive as guarenteed.

8. In the mid 80's before Cosmos IIb, Federal Express put out a guarantee that they would tell you within 30 minutes where your package was.

Mary A Johnson2/10/2016

Mary A Johnson #2 - True ... at least according to Tom Peters! :-)

Chuck Siegfried2/10/2016

Chuck Siegfried #2 is a funny story because I had to explain this to Fred Smith. He asked how could this happen. well back in the old days the customer had to provide ring back tone to the customers and in this case we had two ring back generators on the ACD. So during the time the caller was answered before they heard a ring we were having issues with one of the ring back generators so i took it off line. So in reality the caller would get answered in some cases becasue we didn't have enough ports to provide ringback while they waited in que. too funny but true.

Melissa Leech Ziemer2/10/2016

Melissa Leech Ziemer All true.

Marsha Terry Rider2/10/2016

Marsha Terry Rider I thought #4 was at least partially false. I thought the purpose of the FTL merger was to get Narita landing rights for expansion of Far East service.

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/11/2016

Answers (as far as JB's memory remembers....)

1. Once a customer called for a pickup, and the courier arrived for the package before they got off the phone. True, when DADS was installed in the vans for dispatching, a courier was making a delivery next door to this business, the customer gave info to the call center, then was asking a question about another airbill#; the courier went to his van, saw the dispatch seconds after it was sent, then went into this business and said 'where's the package??'; before DADS it took 2-3 hours for couriers to get to a customer, so customers would call ahead and say the package was ready...even if it wasn't...so DADS changed that scenario...

2. At times the call center could answer the phone before the first ring. True

3. If a customers phone call wasn't answered in 20 seconds and they dropped off, this was called an Dropped Call somewhat a trick question, it was called an Abandonned Call

4. Federal Express bought Flying Tigers to increase International Freight business. False; Flying Tigers was purchased primarily for the hundreds of International landing rights that it owned. Federal Express lost 1/2 the freight business that Flying Tigers had very quickly. UPS didn't want to use us of course, and Freight Forwarders thought they were in competition with FedEx, since FedEx would deliver the freight to the customers directly if requested

5. At one time, Federal Express spent tens of millions to rent private aircrat to deliver freight that couldn't get out of the Hub True

6. In the late 90's Federal Express did unconditional leases for aircraft and pilots to fly International routes, that were not cancellable. True

7. Up until the late 90's Customer Service agents could themselves authorize doing things to help customers whose packages didn't arrive as guarenteed. True; an example was that a customer shipped Rendezvous BBQ to his mother in a care home in Florida which didn't arrive on her birthday. The customer service agent found a local BBQ place and had it delivered to the mother.

8. In the mid 80's before Cosmos IIb, Federal Express put out a guarantee that they would tell you within 30 minutes where your package was. True; even though there was only a package scan at the origination station, destination station and the hub(exceptions), the Call Center would get back with you within 30 minutes to tell you which of those places the package was located.

FedEx History Trivia

Answer True or False to any of the below Statements

1. Zapmail machines were manufactured by TEC of Japan

2. Federal Express terminals were originally IBM 3270 displays

3. Federal Express initially started the business by using passenger airlines

4. Federal Express used passenger airlines to start International service

5. Automation did not want Powership 3 to be a graphical based computer. (ie airbill showed as an image on the screen, vs table driven)

6. When the SuperTrackers were completely re-engineered and manufactured(EST's), Ground Ops management would not approve a Laser scanner on the device for scanning.

Answers

1. Zapmail machines were manufactured by TEC of Japan False: were manufactured by NEC (Nippon Electric Company)

2. Federal Express terminals were originally IBM 3270 displays False: Burroughs & Incoterm & teletype/teleprinters

3. Federal Express initially started the business by using passenger airlines False: First week was on Falcons, then a month on passenger airlines, as the network was redesigned; then back to Falcons

4. Federal Express used passenger airlines to start International service True: Air Canada

5. Automation did not want Powership 3 to be a graphical based computer. (ie airbill showed as an image on the screen, vs table driven) True: PS3 was for the front office, and required less packages to justify a free unit; CA didn't want the PS3 to be more sophisticated than PS2s, since the PS2 required more packages; they wanted the device to become more sophisticated as the number of packages required, went up.

6. When the SuperTrackers were completely re-engineered and manufactured(EST's), Ground Ops management would not approve a Laser scanner on the device for scanning. True: DGO wanted a laser but wouldn't justify it based on productivity; mgmt would accept it if the laser was put on the tip end, but that would have required all new quadracks in the field; FWS made the decision to go forward and add the $120 Laser scanner. UPS had already deployed laser scanning on the DIAD. 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/25/2016

Answers...best I can remember

a. name the manufacturer of FedEx's first computer Burroughs (now part of Unisys)

b. name Federal Express' first word processing system Wang and Jacquard; Wang won out, when Jacquard couldn't support 3270 IBM emulation on the same device.

c. name Federal Express' first email or messaging system something called Y Message, followed by Profs, then EMC2

d. what did Federal Express once give to your first born child? silver spoon was the correct answer

e. where did names for Federal Express aircraft come from? Employees childrens names was the correct answer; first jet was named after FWS' daughter Wendy

f. why did the IBM Series/1 Not become the mini computer for Dads and station processing? Jim Barksdale was pro IBM, having worked there and wanted a computer system that could support applications and 3270 screens(IBM display support), so the Series/1 was analyzed to replace the DEC. DADS was developed on a PDP-11/34 DEC computer, and cost of that mini computer and disks were around $30K+; to run the same application on a Series/1 computer was $120,000....so the Series/1 wasn't feasible. Additionally Jim Bentley continued to get volume discounts on the DEC computers continually reducing the price, and Jim Moore kept pushing to get the size of computer down from the size of two small refrigerators, to a box that could be shipped overnight to replace any failed units. 1 ·

Chris Apalodimas2/27/2016

Chris Apalodimas c. Not really email, but after IMS was installed, the Field used to use something called Message Switching that utilized some very basic functionality within IMS where stations communicated with each other. (Mostly used to track lost/mis-directed packages and such). Jere Bledsoe might chime in 'cause I think his group managed the software. d. Used to get a $50 savings bond.

Question?I remember seeing some comments about some that took the fedex buyout, and received a sum of money that might have affected their medicare part B premium...it put them in a higher tax bracket ...and someone said you could get an exception on thisjust checking on any info on this.... have a friend who will be retiring this year, from another company, who was deciding whether to take a cash out of their pension or an annuity of many years...they are eligible for medicare soon after their retirement

Gary Phillips2/28/2016

Gary Phillips Mine was affected buy the buyout. My medicare payment doubled. You have to take proof of a life changing even to Social Security to get the rate lowered. A company reorganization like the buyout, a divorce, marriage, etc qualifies. They base your medicare payment on a previous year return. Mine was based on 2013 which increased dramatically because of the buyout. So, it's good to have a different year return with you as well. 1 ·

FedEx TriviaWhat were the differences between the Zapmailer I and Zapmailer 2 machines?

Ben Moore2/29/2016

Ben Moore Leased circuits? 1 ·

Eddie Garrison2/29/2016

Eddie Garrison One was in stations or "closet" and other at customer offices

Chris Apalodimas2/29/2016

Chris Apalodimas I was in the dropbox group in the old DGO when Zapmail launched. I believe Zapmail was launched with about 980+/- zap machines around the country. One zap machine per zip code, a system constrating (due to COSMOS dispatching I think). This did create a bit of a problem with high density zips like NYC. I know we had one Zap machine placed in Dr. Ponder's old hometown, or something like that!?! Our group was tasked with finding 'easy' access locations for the Zap 1 machines; places like small closet sized offices in office complexes, unused hotel rooms and the like. The reason was that our group was skilled in negotiating the placement of drop boxes and this was similar enough to their regular work. So, at a number of sites FedEs rented an unused hotel room for Zap machines. Needless to say as time went on, we did hear stories of couriers taking breaks at the hotel, using the swimming pool and other amenities. .. Gary Roth was a Sr. Manager in marketing at the time. I remember talking with him and and how exasperated he was coming up with five year projections on a nearly daily basis as we neared launch. Apparently, the powers that be kept 'tweaking' the 'assumptions' to come up with the volume/revenue numbers they wanted. Prior to the launch of Zapmail was a great time for FedEx, we were making money, we were innovating, and doing a lot of fun stuff, at least technology-wise. ..

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/19/2016

Good Question, the 'official' company start date for operations is listed as April 17, 1973 as I understand. I was still in college then. ----------------------------------------------------

Here are some other important dates: June 18, 1971 Federal Express was incorporated as a Delaware company based in Little Rock. Name included 'Federal' because the company anticipated getting a large Federal Reserve contract flying bank checks and paper. They lost the bid. Dec 1971 - Fred Smith commissions two separate consultant studies on making the corporation into a small package airline. He doesn't let each consultant company know about each other.

1. AT Kearnery, study led by Roger Frock

2. Former Pan Am employees (Art Bass, Vince Fagan & Tucker Taylor) Late 1972- FWS decides to move from Little Rock and build a sort hub in Memphis. He hires young engineer, Ted Weise to coordinate the move and hub build. March 12, 1973 FedEx launches service to 11 cities. Only gets 6 packages that night. Field operations continued but Falcon flights cancelled and airlines used for pkg transport, while the system was re-designed with Charlie Brandon coordinating. Study concluded they were mostly going to the wrong cities initially.

April 17, 1973 FedEx Falcon flights resume as FedEx launches service with 25 cities. 186 packages that night. ·

1. Name the consultant and author that developed FedEx's SFA (Survey Feedback Action) plan?

2. Why did the company develop SFA?

3. From which other company's plans did FedEx consolidate to form the Guaranteed Fair Treatment Policy?

Deby Abbott Jolley3/21/2016

Deby Abbott Jolley Inquiring minds....

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/22/2016

1. Name the consultant and author that developed FedEx's SFA (Survey Feedback Action) plan? Charles L. Hughes; and industrial psychologist for Texas Instruments and IBM

2. Why did the company develop SFA? The teamsters had attempted 3 times to unionize the field & mechanics; FWS wanted to know where the company was vulnerable. In 1978 FedEx contracted with a group at the Univ of Michigan to do a survey called the "Survey of Organizations",130 questions); the survey wasn't too much use; the company then contracted with Charles Hughes to develop a smaller survey called the SFA (Survey Feedback Action) The surveys of the first two years showed that employees considered the company Family and were proud to work there, but 34% of the employees did not believe 'have confidence in the fairness of management'

3. From which other company's plans did FedEx consolidate to form the Guaranteed Fair Treatment Policy? Marriott's grievance procedure IBM's "Speak Up" Delta's "Open Door" 4. Why did the company develop this plan? The company had grown fast and hired lots of supervisors and managers due to the promote from within policy. Many of the new supervisors and managers had little training. FWS determined that supervisors must learn to supervise and treat people with respect. It was started as an open door policy so grievances could be aired.

Subject: Some Retiree Medicare Notes

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/30/2016

Some Retiree Medicare NotesIf you are going on Medicare this year here are a few things to note:If you sign up for your supplement, drugs, dental or vision using OneExchange, they set flags that allow re-imbursement of the $85/month stipend that FedEx gives retirees and spouses. Otherwise you have to submit paperwork when you have paid premiums. The $85 times the number of months you will be on Medicare that year are deposited into an account for you. I originally thought they gave you $85 when the first of the month came around, but they deposit the total for the year into your account. When you pay premiums, OneExchange will cut you checks if you signed up thru them. I wanted to do auto deposit but the checks started coming before I was allowed access thru the system. When you have signed up for the medigap supplement, drugs, dental or vision, you will start getting cards and information in the mail. some of these plans you have to go ahead and pay the first month ahead of time. You are allowed to stay on the FedEx dental and vision plans, for 18 months, but don't receive any information about this until about 3 weeks before your 65th birthday; so you might want to wait before signing up for dental/vision until you get that information.OneExchange agents were very well trained and can provide you with lots of options, they don't try to sell you on one or another but look for the cheapest prices, even if that is only a few dollar savings a month to you.I highly recommend starting a notebook with dividers to put all the paperwork you will be getting, because it will be a lot.A notebook for each person. Dividers at least for Social Security, Medicare, Supplement, Drugs, Vision, Dental, FedEx and a page with all the logon/passwords for each of the above plan you decide to go with.

Irene Williams3/30/2016

Irene Williams Good info. Also, I have found that the $85/mo contribution to the account has been drawn down to $0 already in just 3 months. So now, paperwork must be filled out for reimbursements.

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/30/2016

Janie Haynes3/30/2016

Janie Haynes Jimmy, thanks for posting this. I'm definitely going to check out Humana, Renaissance, and VSP. Did you contact the companies directly or go through FedEx?

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/30/2016

Went thru OneExchange with FedEx but also called my dentist and eye doctor for suggestions. The dental insurance is something but none are very good. They do get you some discounts, and maybe your cleanings and xrays, but pay very little on other work and max out at $1000 or $1500 per year. Supposedly Delta Dental, not offered thru oneexchange, was a good plan and some offices said a group plan was offered on the medicare obamacare exchange which did pay well, but was too much trouble to sign up thru everything for me. The vision plans essentially pay for an eye exam each year, and a basic pair of glasses or some contacts. The eye doctors office recommended Davis VSP Plus, but I think that is a group plan and I couldn't find information to sign up as an individual. If you are diabetic, you get your eye exam under Medicare Part B paid for annually. And the OneExchange site was pretty good on determining which plan was good for you for drugs. Just sign up for your account (which you can only do 3 months before your birthday) and enter your drugs into the system and save. You can then see the plans offered that carry those drugs. The agents have a good understanding of how to handle. If you are taking some really expensive drugs and might go into the donut hole where you pay the majority costs for the drugs, they can recommend some options. they usually recommend filling your last drug order thru Cigna to get a 3 month supply before going onto a medicare part D drug plan.

Janie Haynes3/30/2016

Janie Haynes Thanks

Jack Brown3/31/2016

Jack Brown If you are in good health, that is a lot to pay every month for insurance. Have you researched the Advantage plans? My wife and I use the Humana Gold Advantage plan which covers all Medicare Parts. We each have $104 deducted each month by Social Security and pay Humana a monthly premium of $35 each. Humana has its own mail order pharmacy, so we have no co-pay on all of our prescriptions but 2. These 2 are filled at CVS, which have co-pays. 1 ·

Ray Lipham4/1/2016

Ray Lipham I have a question that probably is of interest to anyone during the transition from FedEx medical insurance to Medicare. The way I understand it, when you start the year that you turn 65, you are on FedEx insurance and don't make the transition until you actually turn 65. How does FedEx handle the $400 per year Health Reimbursement Account the year that you turn 65? Do they prorate per month or do you get the full amount to spend up until you go on Medicare? If there is a balance in the account at the time you switch to Medicare, does that balance get transferred over to your Medicare account or does it just go away? I was planning to call and ask but I thought I'd first post the question here since the answers may be of interest to others during their transition.

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/1/2016

Good question, and you actually transition to Medicare, not on your birthday, but the 1st of the month that your birthday is in. So if your birthday is May 15, Medicare starts May 1st, and FedEx insurance ends on April 30th; I was pleasantly surprised that the pension check automatically stopped taking out the FedEx monthly insurance premium, without having to call them.

FedEx Trivia

What FedEx company did this idea spawn?Products would be shipped from suppliers and delivered by large trucks to a neighborhood where a tent could be set up. Part time couriers, much like newspaper delivery carriers would take their packages and deliver to homes in their neighborhoods. The couriers would do no package pickup, just delivery. This would provide a low cost shipping option for delivery from Internet shopping.

Don is correct! Original plan was to do this at Express, but costs were too high. Ground was given the task to come up with a Delivery only package service. 1 ·

Harry PotterA favorite story as told by a FedEx computer vendor was the morning that FedEx delivered 100,000 plus copies of a Harry Potter novel on a Saturday morning as a special edition release of the book.He went outside with his daughter who was still in pajamas waiting on the FedEx delivery van.He looked down the street and there were dozens of families also waiting, many in pajamas waiting on the FedEx courier. The FedEx van and stopped at each home, and he said the families ran back inside their homes as they received their FedEx package with the prized new release of Harry Potter. He said..."this should be made into a FedEx commercial". FedEx Express & Ground both participated in this release on the next book also.
