Melissa Leech Ziemer12/23/2016

Melissa Leech Ziemer Don was one of the best Managers in the Business Service Center Network in Houston--mid-'80s. He always went above & beyond. Before Kinkos was big, FedEx put giant copy machines in the BSCs & we were in the copy business. He would go to companies in the area to solicit business & always led in sales. One time when it was raining, he stood inside the door of his main BSC with an umbrella and walked people in keeping them dry with it. Always fair with his agents. MIssed very much when he left for bigger & better things at FedEx.

Eric Brosch How awesome would it be to buy SpaceX and rebrand it SpaceEx? Overnight delivery to the ISS!

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/30/2016

It has been mentioned before, but FedEx was part owner in a company that launched satellites called SpaceTran or FedEx SpaceTran. NASA's original plan for the space shuttle fleet, was that they were going to be reusuable and get cheaper. Launches were planned to happen every week. Nasa put out feelers that they would entertain private companies doing all the management for these launches. But the shuttles got heavier, solid boosters had to be added, making it more complicated and they never could turn the fleet regulary. With FedEx SpaceTran, it was thought that company could bid on the mgmt of the launches. ...and owning SpaceX would be neat... 2 ·

Eric Brosch12/30/2016

Eric Brosch I believe the original goal was to get costs down to $1000/lb, but they never got within even an order of magnitude of that. Challenger added even more safety concerns and that was that. Never heard of SpaceTran. We have a space division now too, mostly focused on logistics of moving equipment to/from KSC as I understand it. Thanks for the info!

Chris Apalodimas12/30/2016

Hey FedEx ITD gang. I'm finishing up my signup for Medigap and related insurance. I'm still reviewing Part D coverage. I'm thinking of signing up with SilverScripts Choice (runs about $30).Anyone have any comments on who they're using and if they like them or what issues they've had?My drug formulary is small and generic so going with a lower cost plan I think will work for me. The lower end plans run around $30 (and pretty much cover Tier 1 & 2). The higher end plans run around $70 and give you a broader range as well as no deductible (not all, of course).Found out some other stuff as well, which I'll share with Jimmy and he can do an annual Medicare update :-)So please share if you can. Thanks!

Jimmy Glenn Burk12/30/2016

Silverscripts is an excellent plan, know several that use it. My wife uses Humana, primarily because she only has two drugs and at Humana, they mail you a 3 month supplly of generics at no extra cost. You can fill any emergency drugs at Walmart. I use ExpressScripts because they better cover some diabetes drugs I have to take that are expensive. We've had zero issues using the supplemental plans or drug plans fortunately. 1 ·

Chris Apalodimas12/30/2016

Chris Apalodimas JImmy, great info, thanks for sharing. I''m like Stephaine, 3 meds, all generic, and a 90 day supply comes with no extra cost with SilverScripts.

J. David White12/30/2016

J. David White Chris Apalodimas I also am using SilverScripts Part D and haven't had any problems and relatively low cost for 4 maintenance prescriptions for last 2 years. I've signed up for the 90 day supplies. 1 ·

Jack Brown12/30/2016

Jack Brown I use Humana Medicare Advantage. In Alabama, my monthly premium is $43 per month (2017) ($15 co-pay) .I have only visited my doctor 4 times this year. I added Dental Coverage for $17.50 per month. I have 2 maintenance drugs. I get a 90 day supply through the HumanaPharmacy, so there isn't any co-pay. 1 ·

Mike Acord12/31/2016

Mike Acord I chose SilverScript's cheapest plan for 2016, my first year in MedicareLand. It costs me $20.90 per month here in MO. My Lipitor and blood pressure RX are $ 3 per month each. I had a few other scripts like antibiotics and they were all reasonably priced IMO. 1 ·

Chris Apalodimas1/1/2017

Chris Apalodimas Thanks everyone for the great comments Happy New Year! 1 ·

Jane Meredith Robbins1/5/2017

Jane Meredith Robbins DONUT HOLE. We choose SilverScripts for my husband. (I'm 3 years away from that and still dealing with the FedEx Retiree plan). SS is reasonably priced and most medications are not expensive. We did make sure all were on the formulary. However, he takes insulin and the Donut Hole is going to get us quick and bad. His first 90 supply will be over $500 out of pocket. The second 90 day supply will be about $1500 out of pocket. Then it gets better with the 3rd and 4th 90 day supply for 2017. Did anyone else experience the Donut Hole? We figured it for the year on the Medicare Part D online page. Edited · 1 ·

Jack Brown1/5/2017

Jack Brown My wife went into the "donut hole" in 2015 with one prescription and our co-pay was actually lower than before she entered "the hole". When you go into "the hole", the drug companies give you a discount. Did you happen to read about that?

Subject: Senior National Park Pass

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/4/2017

Senior National Park PassI thought I would pass long for you retirees who are 62 or over. Found this note on the Early Retiree Forum.Currently you can by a Senior lifetime pass to National Parks and Monuments for $10. It is recommended that you get one for each spouse, and it can save you money whenever you travel. I saved over $40 when visiting the Grand Canyon & Arizona areas a couple years ago.In Congress is a bill, already passed by the House, where that price goes to $80. So, if you don't have one, and want one, you may want to go ahead and get it. You do have to visit certain offices and there is one about 15 miles north of Memphis. ----------------------- "If you or a family member or friend are age 62 or older and have not purchased your federal Senior Pass that gets you free entry into National Parks and other recreation sites, and 1/2 off on camping, you should consider doing so very soon, within the week. The House of Representatives just passed HR4680 http://tinyurl.com/zo2hl6f that will, if the Senate passes it, change the $10 lifetime Senior Pass to cost the same as the annual America the Beautiful Pass, which is currently $80 for a year. The companion bill in the Senate is S2257 - http://tinyurl.com/h582fdb" .

David Hunt I bought the regular in 2008 for $85. It was only good for one year. But paid for it self during our Zion National Park. The pass is good for what every car you are in with as many people as it can legally hold. One of the camping buddies had a Expedition XL that carried 8. The pass saved the entrance fee for the 6 other people. I bought my Senior this year at Heber Springs campground.is a Corps of Engineers campground. Edited ·

Senior National Park Pass

Jimmy Glenn Burk1/4/2017

...and even at $80 per pass this is a good deal if you visit the parks. Anyone in your car is covered, or if there is a person fee, you and 3 other people get in free. The recommendation for both spouses to get one, is because the pass does not transfer to spouse if in your name.

The following article is probably more for those still working, about how to keep your desk clear. It's similar to FWS KISS principle.I chuckled around the mid 80's when I first met a manager, Dick Braley, who had been hired from NASA. His desk was immaculate...you could eat off it, and there was generally only one of two pieces of paper on it. I asked him ...how do you do it?He said, well first of all, I send almost anything requiring action to someone, anyone on my staff and let them handle it. What few memos I have left...I either file...or just put in my top drawer at the end of the day.....It was way too funny, but probably not for his staff...https://zenhabits.net/steps-to-permanently-clear-desk/

The honorees were Cheryl Bowen(#9777, 32+ years) Sue Tritt (#7467, 33+ years) and Ernie Ohle (#1319, 37 years!) Also attending were current employees Becky Gafford and Yolanda Herrera, former employees Lana Stockdale and Carol Ohle, and retiree Bob Baxter. All had worked together in the past at the FedEx Tech Center in Colorado Springs. Bob and Marge decorated their beautiful home with balloons and banners. Jimmy Glenn Burk1/24/2017

Article from Jan 24th Commercial Appeal: _______________ FedEx speeds up leadership roles of Bronczek, Cunningham Wayne Risher , USA TODAY NETWORK – TennesseeFedEx has sped up top leadership changes including Frederick W. Smith's replacement by David J. Bronczek as president. Bronczek will step into the president's role Feb. 1, 11 months sooner than FedEx had announced in September. Smith will remain chairman and chief executive officer. FedEx cited better-than-expected progress in integrating European acquisition TNT Express for the modified timetable. “While this was announced last September, substantial progress in integrating the TNT acquisition into FedEx Express now allows us to accelerate Dave’s promotion by 11 months in advance of Fiscal Year 2018. He is uniquely qualified to take on the position of President and Chief Operating Officer,” Smith said. “Under Dave’s leadership for the past 17 years, the FedEx Express team has achieved outstanding financial results and service levels.” The promotion could be seen as positioning Bronczek, 62, as a potential successor to Smith, though the 72-year-old company founder has shown no indications of leaving. A Cleveland, Ohio, native and Kent State University graduate, Bronczek joined FedEx in 1976 and came up through the ranks in pickup and delivery operations. He became a managing director of operations in 1983. He has been president and chief executive of FedEx Express since 2000 after serving as executive vice president and chief operating officer of the unit.Bronczek also will serve as chief operating officer, responsible for marketing, sales and all FedEx operating companies. FedEx Corp. is the corporate entity that operates FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight and FedEx Office. FedEx named David L. Cunningham to succeed Bronczek as president and chief executive officer of FedEx Express. Cunningham, 55, previously was regional president of FedEx’s Asia Pacific Region and served most recently as executive vice president and chief operating officer. He’ll be responsible for the leadership and direction of FedEx Express and TNT Express. He’ll also serve on the FedEx Corp. strategic management committee. Cunningham is a University of Memphis product, with a master’s degree in marketing in 1988 and a bachelor of science in finance in 1983. He joined FedEx in 1982. “Beginning more than 30 years ago at the Memphis World Hub, David Cunningham has progressed through the FedEx ranks and served in leadership roles in finance, as well as domestic and international operations. These experiences have prepared him to lead FedEx Express – our largest operating company,” said Smith. “He is another excellent example of our promote from within philosophy. The progress we have made on multiple strategic projects makes it possible for us to accelerate the timing of both of these promotions, while continuing to achieve our important objectives at FedEx

Buddy Johnson1/25/2017

Buddy Johnson A. Bill Stewart

Don Rose1/25/2017

Don Rose Buddy, you are thinking of Bill Stuart. The first IT person to start working at FedEx was Colin Kelly Stewart, or Stew as he was known. Stew started a couple of weeks before the other 4 of us, to get a jump on the system that tracked aircraft parts. Bill may have been the first official IT hire, but he started Feb 1, 1973 with Jere Bledsoe, Larry Brock, and myself. Actually, Larry may have been the first hired. He was the person that called me to tell me about a new company that was looking for programmer analysts. 1 ·

Marsha Terry Rider1/25/2017

Marsha Terry Rider I thought Warren Cooper was the first IT person. In fact more likely the first EMPLOYEE. I was told he had the empid #1 but had to give it up for THE boss. It could be corporate legend, though.

Don Rose1/25/2017

Don Rose I don't think Warren Cooper was emp # 1. That belonged to David (I can't remember his last name) who worked in Hanger 8 I believe. He left the company and, when the payroll system was being redone, Fred was given # 1. I believe Fred's original emp # was 7.

Peter Dangerfield1/25/2017

Peter Dangerfield I think David Heffington was 007 Don??

Don Rose1/25/2017

Don Rose I was just reminded that emp # 1 was the lady at Littlerock Airmotive that did payroll and also assigned emp numbers. You are correct Pete, David was # 7. My memory is fuzzy (it was only 44 years ago), but I know Fred was assigned # 1 when payroll was rewritten. 1 ·

Buddy Johnson1/25/2017

Buddy Johnson Don Rose Heffington was 007. Fred was given 1 in the 79-80 timeframe. It was a major deal to change FWS from some higher number to 001. That was one of Jim Schmiedicke's suck-up projects 😳😳

Buddy Johnson1/25/2017

Buddy Johnson Marsha Terry Rider Warren Cooper had an empno in range with the rest of employees that came with Cook in 1978

Do you miss work?Having finished watching the excellent movie "Hidden Figures", I was chauferring my wife Stephanie to a yarn store. She knew I was interested in the movie, it had NASA, rockets, engineers, high level math, outer space and such, which interest anyone that loves science fiction, and I'm an engineer to boot so I really enjoyed it.Out of the blue she asks, "Do you miss work?" which has been asked several times in the 9 years I've been retired.Without hesitation I said NO...don't miss it a bit. I miss the people but that is about all. I'm busier than ever doing things I mostly want to do...I even enjoy driving Stephanie on errands. So the question of the day, How long have you been retired? Do you miss Work???

Don Rose1/26/2017

I tried to get a retiree badge and found out that there are three criteria. You must have been at least 55 when you left the company, you must be listed as retired in the system and you have to have at least 5 years of service. After over 25 years of service at the tender age of 54, I was laid off so no retiree badge for me.

If you go to the Corporate FedEx Retiree Club (www.ferc1.org) , there is info on the retiree badge, but you have to join to see the page. You can join with 5 years continuous service, and are participating in a FedEx retirement plan. ---------------------------------------------- I've copied the info to get a Badge for those below that may not have access. Info is listed under Benefits after you log onto the site: FEDEX RETIREE ID BADGES The following procedures are for use by FedEx Corporate, FedEx Express, FedEx Services, FedEx Trade Networks, FedEx TechConnect, and FedEx Supply Chain. Other FedEx Operating Companies should contact their HR departments to determine their badge procedures. Initial Retiree ID Badge Initial retiree badges are ordered online by the manager and can only be processed once the employee's last issued id badge has been returned to Corporate Identification Systems by the manager. If a retiree does not receive the badge in a timely manner, he/she should contact former location management. To be eligible for this benefit, employees must meet all of the following criteria at the time they leave FedEx. •Be at least 55 years of age or older •Have at least 5 years of credited service •Have voluntarily resigned •Have a rehire status of 'yes' or 'conditional' •Show 'RETIRED' status in PRISM Lost Retiree ID Badges A retiree who loses an ID badge or needs a replacement badge due to it getting old or faded should contact Corporate Identification Systems. Fedex pushing the edge of technology, early '80s version. We just signed a two million dollar contract with Paradyne, largest contract from Telecommunications at the time.

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/8/2017

Ancel, didn't you name the management system something like MARS? 2 ·

Akita Hank2/8/2017

A forgot about that! Wasn't that for Management And Restoration System, or something like that? 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/8/2017

Trivia History One of the main reasons that Ancel pushed to change all AT&T modems out and replace with Paradyne at the time was due to outages. AT&T at the time couldn't provide dial backup to their modems which meant when any part of the data circuit to the station went bad, the station couldn't receive dispatchs. AT&T had to provide long distance and circuits across state lines, but couldn't offer basic phone services...that had to be done with the local Bell company, many of which didn't even know what dial back up was. As the network grew larger, there were more frequent outages and it affected our customers and service levels. If FedEx went with another vendor it was easier to get back up systems in place. Ancel & Terry were testing multiple modems and the Paradyne management system. After several long outages that week, Jim Barksdale came down to talk to Ancel and said something like...what have we got to do to fix this? Ancel said we can buy paradyne modems and put in the field but they wouldn't lease the mgmt system. JLB told Ancel...tell them to give us a lease price for the mgmt system....and we will buy their stuff.... I happened to be standing there when JLB gave Ancel the instructions...and Ancel went and worked a deal.... Lot's of decisions were made like that in the early days.....no committees...minimum paperwork and signatures...just go ....do what needs to be done... 3 ·

Sheila Turnage Harrell You guys were an awesome IT team! You really pushed the edge of technology and made us all proud! Thx for your legacy! 👍🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 2 ·

Akita Hank2/9/2017

Akita Hank We negotiated a number of concessions with Paradyne such as: For X number of modems at a single location they would provide a free spare. They would provide a spare modem with switchover capability for locations they could not respond to in two hours. They would work with us in developing improvements to their systems. Etc One of the negotiation points with Paradyne was the cost per modem. As with most vendors, they provided substantial quantity discounts. We contract to purchase X number of units and they will charge us Y dollars per unit. Our company and the network underwent substantial growth the previous two years, and we anticipated similar growth over the two-year period of the contract. Terry and I put forth what some thought was an aggressive growth projection, but in our minds it was still conservative. Paradyne gave us a substantial discount for that quantity. Jim Barksdale was concerned about what the cost would be if we did not purchase that many. They quickly committed to selling us the units at the discounted price regardless of how many we purchased. I think we ultimately blew through that quantity in well less than two years.

Gary Phillips2/10/2017

Gary Phillips The major setup of the system coincided with the move of Network Control Center to the CTC, module I. I had just installed a similar system at American Airlines with Racal Milgo modems so the timing for me was perfect for relocating back to Memphis with FedEx. Thanls Ancel. :)

Space Mountain

FedEx Story from the fedexlegends webpage(my brother is Ray Burk) During the time that FedEx sponsored Space Mountain, FedEx employees could enter the ride thru a special company lounge, located out of sight, to the right of the main entrance. Families could get a drink and snack, and were taken thru a interconnected corridor to a place where they were put on the ride, just before the normal line of people were loaded. It was a nice thing to have, especially on a hot day. It was open Monday thru Friday. One of my brothers, also a FedEx employee, took his Family to Orlando and wanted to ride Space Mountain. But he went on a Saturday,,, not knowing it was closed. The line wait was about an hour long at the entrance. He found a maintenance employee and wanted to know where the lounge was. The mx person gruffly told him it was closed, and my brother said, he was with FedEx & just wanted to get his family on the ride. The MX guy gruffly said...Well....Ok....follow me... Instead of taking him to the lounge, he took my brother's family to the main entrance and started walking past the main line, telling them to move over...and he walked them all the way to the loading point of the ride, and put them on. My bro said that people were yelling...take me...take me.... He was embarrassed a little....but not too much. 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/15/2017

Holiday Inn University FedEx held many many classes at the Holiday Inn University Hotel in Olive Branch. Holiday Inn also used the hotel as a training facility for their personnel and chefs. Someone told me the story of a time when the facility was up for sale and Federal Express was considering buying it for training purposes. In some meeting Jim Barksdale told them that he had nixed the deal about owning a hotel. He had been in a hotel somewhere and saw cockroaches crawling on the floor or his bed.... He said, I don't want to be the person that employees call, telling me there are cockroaches in their room...............

Subject: Affordable Care Act/ ObamaCare

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/15/2017

Affordable Care Act/ ObamaCareThis is not a political question, but one I ask, for facts, as you know them and your opinions. We read so many pros and cons that it totally confuses me. And especially if you have researched this more than I have, what are the real numbers out there?Basic Questions: a. In your life is the ACA good for you? b. Do you think the ACA is good for others that need insurance & medical help, and if not the ACA, what should Congress do to help provide insurance...? c. I'm on medicare now, which is great, but if Congress eliminates the Cadillac tax on corporations, do you think costs of FedEx retiree insurance will drop? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For sure, some pros of the ACA below that are liked( but probably add to the cost of insurance for all), are listed below:Pros 1) you can't be denied insurance if you have a serious condition; previously you could be denied 2)your children up to the age of 25? can stay on your insurance whether in school or not, whether married or not 3)probably XXmillions were added to the ACA under medicaid, & more have been able to get insurance with supplements, from taxes collected overall, so even though many doctors won't take medicaid, it appears that many more people can get some insurance support for billsCons 1) FedEx Insurance costs skyrocketed(especially for retirees under 65), and benefits decreased due to the cadillac tax imposed under the ACA 2) Costs have increased annually to get ACA insurance, and there is a high out of pocket expense before benefits are paid (this might have happened with or without the ACA); but it seems that the high premium costs are comparable to what FedEx retirees have to pay now. 3) There are arguments about the xx million under the ACA (some of these had private insurance but their companies dropped it with the ACA, prisoners were added to the number, and all those under medicaid were added to the number); it seems like more have availability of insurance with the ACA, but the numbers are confusing 4)There are 2-3K pages in the ACA, and over 20K pages of guidelines making it difficult to read

Jimmy Glenn Burk2/15/2017

Added: Pro's: The ACA, if you have insurance, provides preventive coverage for annual checkup, colonoscopy and other tests Cons: Many things have been deleted by insurance(or at least FedEx insurance: Coverage for births, specialist doctor care coverage) Edited ·

They are amazed at the benefits employees get including 3 month maternity leave for male employees, coffee bars & kumbucha on tapI wrote the following tidbit: ------------------------------------------------------History Tidbit Fashion Wear:When Dennis Jones took over the CIO position, one of his first trips was to see West Coast companies and see how they recruited and rewarded their employees. He took about 16 of us on this trip to HP, BMC, HP, SUN, Oracle and others. Most employees that presented to us wore jeans, t-shirts, some wore sandals etc. One at HP told us that he was actually overdressed, he wore a collared shirt because he heard we were coming. At the time, everyone at FedEx had to wear suits and ties, and women ,business dress. When he returned, DHJ got permission for IT employees to go casual...ie jeans etc and I remember Laurie Tucker campaigning for leisure wear for the ladies. As I understand, casual dress came to a complete stop a few weeks later. FWS was at the CTC awhen the first employees he saw in the hall was an Indian gentleman in shorts and sandals, and a lady in leotards.....But we were able to go business casual after that, but no jeans/shorts unless we paid for them on charity days.....------------ FedEx History Tidbit:until the early 1990's everyone in ITD pooled their funds to buy a coffee maker and paid per cup into a fund. Only groups I remember that didn't pay was maybe Computer Ops night shift. Harry Dalton in SIS started using a coffee/tea & popcorn service for his employees. When I took over LHSD from Kevin Humphries we were the second group to do this. Walking thru the building last year, there looked like snacks available for employees around the coffee, but wasn't sure they were free or not...

Marsha Terry Rider3/9/2017

Marsha Terry Rider In some areas we were allowed to wear jeans (nice ones) on Fridays if we paid a couple $ for UW (or some such charity). One day my husband, upon hearing about it said "if you can pay to wear jeans one dya, why can't you just wear jeans ANY day?" - he had a point. After that I quit doing it. It was the PRINCIPLE of it, you know. :-)

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/10/2017

Seeing Laura's directory for 2955 brought back a lot of memories, because I was in that building at least 3 different times in my career reporting to different people. 99% of the people in Telecom were great, friendly & real people. They had the FedEx spirit and all wanted to do a great job for the company. But there were sometimes a few hard headed people as in the example below... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not the FedEx spirit:

My funny story ...Trying to use one telephone for one minute at the CTC.Around 1982-84 I reported to John Schwarzmann and worked on various apps for Zapmail. I went to the CTC to connect 4 circuits to the mainframe so that I could test an application that I had written on the Tandem computer. There was no phone installed at that time in the Tandem node area, so I had to go looking for a phone to call network control to activate the lines. I found a room about 4 rooms down. It had about 20 desks, with a phone on each and there were only 4 people in the room. The 4 people weren't busy, just talking to each other.I made my call and noticed the 4 people starring at me. Then the Telecom manager walked over and in a very gruff tone, said that he didn't mind me using the phone once, but those phones were for emergencies for telecom problems; and I wouldn't be able to use them again..... I said but you have at least 15 phones not used to which he replied but when there are emergencies at the call centers we need every phone...I only needed to use the phone once, but didn't like the attitude and said...Who do you work for???He replied quite proudly I work for a Director...Winn Stephenson....So without asking, I used the phone again and called Winn...I said...Winn this is JB and I am at the CTC....I want to use one of your phones....can I do that?...he said yes of course...and I said then please discuss with your manager....then I handed the phone to the manager.... Winn had a talk with him for several minutes. After the mgr put the phone down...he said....Mr. Burk...you can use any phone, any time you want...and ......could we get you some coffee????

Marie McVay3/10/2017

Marie McVay Yes, I grew up in Telecom with some great folks! And I bet I know who that manager was ☺️. I think Chuck might of reported to him years ago. Hahaha 1 ·

Ben Moore3/10/2017

Ben Moore The mainframe didn't move to the CTC until April 1984. I have a CTC story as well. The weekend of the actual move we were bring up the first system in the CTC. Jim Barksdale was there looking over everyone's shoulder but being his typical low key self. There was a brand new Technical Services employee who has the opposite personality of Barksdale. There was a crowd of people including Barksdale and this new employee hovering over the IMSA console. As IMSA started successfully the new employee spun to break out of the crowd and tell everyone that it was up. He bumped straight into Barksdale but didn't know who Barksdale was. He looked startled and asked Barksdale who he was. In his Southern gentleman tone, Barksdale responded "You know Ron Ponder? He works for me." 7 ·

Why did Federal Express once sponsor the Space Mountain ride @ DisneyWorld?

Shane Borden3/10/2017

Shane Borden Yup. Was neat to be able to circumvent the lines!

Pat Woodruff Gunter3/11/2017

Pat Woodruff Gunter 👀

Jimmy Glenn Burk3/11/2017

Answer: As I was told, it cost at least $1m a year to be a Corporate sponsor of Space Mountain or one of the about 5 rides in Epcot, plus the cost of staff to maintain a lounge. One of Disney's new subsidiaries approached FedEx on the idea of a FedEx Space Mountain and FedEx wasn't interested. The new subsidiary offered the sponsorship to FedEx at almost zero cost (for the sponsorship)...and FedEx accepted...I think for two years. Turns out the new subsidiary was a Disney Capital leasing company and they owned quite a few of the leases for some of FedEx's jets. Disney rearranged the leases to include the sponsorship. At the time, from what I read, the leasing business was turning a 12% profit to investors, with minor risk. Later and after 2001, the business took a dive and Disney got out of that business. When visiting the Magic Kingdom...and temps were approaching 100 degrees, and the lines were 1-2 hours long....it was a great benefit for FedEx employees to ignore the lines, go to the side entrance, sit a spell in the air conditioned lounge with free soft drinks and light snacks, and then be guided to a place where you could get on the ride, right before anyone else....

Harry Dalton Story

The history tidbit about whether FedEx had it's own china plates etc, brought back a memory of Harry Dalton.Harry and I were called on many times to give technology presentations to major customers in the Executive conference room. After dining, on the good china, at lunch with a major customer...several of us gave updates on technology at FedEx. I would usually give updates on DADS, Networks, scanning etc; and Harry Dalton usually gave an update on SIS projects, especially on COSMOS IIB and the supertracker.Harry, who had a dry but funny sense of humor started his presentation...insulting the customer, who I think was LL Bean. Harry was an avid fisherman, I think fly fishing and had purchased many things from this customer. Harry:"Before I begin, I want to tell you that you have made one of the most major blunders in the history of fishing fans. It's stupid, and almost unforgivable. Last week, I went to order a fishing bag, which is the best designed bags for fisherman in the world...and you have deleted this from your catalog and no longer selling it.....a major blunder....."but he said it in a way that didn't completely insult them as Harry could do. "Harry then continued with his presentation. The next day, Harry received a package, shipped via FedEx, which contained one of the fishing bags...that the company no longer sold. They had found one, and rushed it out the door...to keep Harry happy.....

Answers Which of the following are True and which are false?

1. The Federal Express Board once demoted FWS and put someone else in charge TRUE - this was early in Federal Express history, when the Board included companies that had financed the company.

2. FWS first office had a hole in the floor which he covered with a rug. TRUE

3. FWS had his own parking spot at the Airport. FALSE, but the General that replaced FWS for a short time required a private parking spot.

4. Federal Express couldn't fly 727's initially because they were too expensive. FALSE - Federal couldn't fly anything much larger than the Falcons due to government regulations. This caused problems in growth when Federal had to sometimes fly 5+ Falcons to the same city at the same time to deliver packages.

5. The DADS(first wireless terminal in vans) first had an alpha keyboard, then didn't, then did TRUE- it had a keyboard, Mr. Barksdale decided he wanted it less complicated so only a numeric keyboard was installed, so it was taken off,, then it was added back on, when it was decided the couriers could sent messages and it might be valuable to type in the customer signature at delivery, so it was put back on

6. A first proposal to identify packages for tracking was by pull off stickers TRUE -it was one of the proposals

7. Federal Express converted from a Burroughs mainframe to IBM, because the Burroughs computers weren't big enough TRUE & FALSE - It was true that the existing Burroughs mainframes weren't big enough to handle the growing volumes and FedEx requested the next largest mainframe be delivered, but it was a 2 year wait to get one. The Cook IT department became available to purchase, and it had one of the largest IBM mainframes on order already, so when the decision was made to absorb Cook's IBM savvy department, the decision was easy to shift to IBM...Plus as Ancel Hankins has pointed out...Burroughs made Charlie Brandon, the CIO very mad and they showed him no respect as to Federal's needs.

8. Federal Express didn't pay their bills for almost 9 months at times. TRUE - and this kept many vendors and small firms from doing business with the company. 9. Federal Express couriers and pilots at times had to pay for fuel in vans and jets. TRUE

10. UPS wanted to purchase Federal Express once the business started booming. FALSE - UPS thought that the overnight business was just a niche market, and they didn't want to enter the market, until years later. 1 ·

Got No Time for SuperHub

....'Shortly after Zapmail was launched, Jim Barksdale transferred John Schwarzmann, Brad Simmons and me to the newly formed Satellite group headed by Alan McArtor. We were located at the Ridgeway location where Advanced Projects group had been located. We were to look at a new bus sized satellite where customers could utilize very small satellite dishes to send electronic documents cheaper than over the att/mci type land networks. A deposit was given to Hughes to start design of the satellite, a slot on a future shuttle launch was received. We continued to talk to companies and countries that could launch large payloads ie France, China etcThe Governor of some entity in China visited Memphis. His province launched satellites and FedEx gave him an overview of our goals and schedule. He had a translator throughout the presentation. After the meeting Gil Mook(the vp) told the Governor, thru the translator 'We have booked you a personally guided SuperHub tour tonight'The Governor then spoke for the first time in English.. 'Got No Time for SuperHub.........Go see Elvis House!' So a tour of Elvis Presley's mansion was booked for him...........

Pilots Handbook is correct

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/6/2017

History Tidbit: The story I've always heard is that the Pilot's Handbook had an article in it that said that IF Federal Express ever bought another airline, then the Federal Pilots would retain seniority over the company being bought. Shortly before Federal Purchased Flying Tigers, this article was removed from the Handbook. There were disagreements between pilots whether this was a purchase or a merger. Flying Tigers wanted seniority based on date of hire, and since it had been in business longer than Federal, many of their pilots would be more senior. Federal Pilots wanted seniority based on the date you started at Federal, giving all of those pilots seniority...as previously defined in the Pilots Handbook. Flying Tigers had a good number of 747's and Federal Express needed those pilots to fly them at the time. Thus started a long tenuous road to merging the lists which was decided by 3rd party arbitration. I don't know but was told, the article in the handbook was removed by Legal while looking at possible airline purchases and it was deemed illegal due to Pilots being governed by different rules than employees. FedEx had entertained purchasing Flying Tigers once before the final purchase. After years of trying to get landing rights, Flying Tigers which was in financial jeopardy looked like a great purchase since they already had landing rights, almost everywhere. Edited · 1 ·

Gary Phillips3/27/2017

Gary Phillips Isn't the maximum vacation 5 weeks now? Plus the personal days and floating holidays of course.

Don Rose3/27/2017

Don Rose Gary, if it is max of 5 weeks now, there a a lot of pissed off employees. I know a bunch of folks that have been getting 6 weeks for a long time.

David Hunt3/27/2017

David Hunt It is 5 weeks or 200 hrs. for services. During the time that IT switched to services, we got an extra week vacation. I believe that was to express gave vacation after you completed a year. With Services, we got vacation as the year went along.

Don Rose3/28/2017

Don Rose We did, in fact, receive 6 weeks vacation at 20 years. When I asked JLB what we got at 25 years, he said we had to start giving it back. That happened when I had passed 20 years.

answers...some of which may be correct..... FedEx History Trivia

1. What was the maximum vacation and number of personal/business days employees ever received at Federal Express? My memory was the normal max vacation time is 5 weeks with 2 personal & 2 business days. One year, when FDX adopted RPS's vacation accrual rules, everyone received one extra week...or 6 weeks vacation max...just for that year.

2. What is unique about the Home Delivery mascot? The Puppy Dog only shows 3 legs.

3. What was the initial concept of Home Delivery? Employees would be like newspaper carriers working a few hours a day...housewives /soccer moms or anyone who would meet at locations in the neighborhood, pick up their packages and deliver to their neighbors...

4. Did Federal Express employees ever receive cost of living raises? Yes, for one year quarterly...but that cost the company 10-12% in addition to smaller merits...so it was abandoned.

5. Did Federal employees ever get discounted gasoline as a benefit? Yes, a nice benefit

6. Why did Federal Express pay management no bonus in a year when profits were $600M which exceeded the goal? The company met it's overall goal for the year....but not the goal Internationally, so it was decided that no management would receive any bonus that year.

7. What was the maximum sick days you could have where you had to start using vacation/personal days or go on short term disability? I was thinking it was five continuous....but could be wrong....and the 5 days could be repeated thru the year..

8. Where were the 3 International Telecom managers located initally overseas? Ted Crampton-UK Alfred Pun(sp)-Hong Kong Denis Geurts-Brussels

9. Why was the initial mis-sort rate of the SuperHub at 95% when first turned on for test? keyers entered the zip code on the package which was then kicked out to a feeder belt, and would then go down the belt and be diverted to another area. No one realized that there was a queue built into the keying position and if the keyer made a mistake and hit CLEAR to key again...that cleared the package in front of them, and the current package being keyed automatically. And keyers being new to 10 keypads, made errors on almost every entry.

10. What was the piece of equipment most stolen at the SuperHub? Tugs...or tug seats in particular. You had to go looking for a tug to move your containers as there was no automatic assignments...and if you found one and had to leave it in your area...to keep it reserved....you took out the seat, which made it difficult to drive Edited ·

Memory Trivia Poll: Did you have ever encounter issues with non-rev air travel? -------------- There is a story in the news about 2-3 girls being kicked off a United Airlines flight due in inappropriate clothing. They were wearing leggings, tights or yoga pants. Someone there relayed the story generating a firestorm on the Internet. Turns out UA had let their Dad on the plane wearing shorts, and their very young sister was able to travel after slipping on a dress. Turns out these were flying on an airline pass with specific dress codes, but there is still an outrage about them doing this.Poll Question:Did you have ever encounter issues with non-rev air travel?

Mike Acord3/29/2017

Hey guys, I love this group and have been lurking for years...never had a reason to post anything up to now, just mostly enjoyed all the posts by our unofficial historian Mr. Jimmy Glenn Burk. But now I have a question that I hope will be pretty easy to answer. One of the things I still do in retirement that I did at FedEx is spend hours and hours and hours in front of my computer. The current chair that I am using is a top-of-the-line HD chair from Office Depot. It has been ok, but is made from that "bonded leather", which is now peeling and flaking all over everything. When I brushed my teeth a few days ago and spit out some small pieces of it, I decided that it was time for it to go. I mean gee whiz, I have been off ciggys for 11 yrs now after smoking for 40 yrs, I sure don't want to dodge the nicotine bullet and die from inhaling "bonded leather" !!!Anyway, the best office/computer chair I ever sat in was the one I had at the tech center in Collierville. So I am hoping someone can tell me the manufacturer of those (I'm guessing SteelCase) and perhaps even the model name and/or number. The ones we had then were covered in purple fabric, iirc, I'm assuming that was FedEx purple. I don't care what color it is, I just need a good chair that won't fall apart or shed. Thanks in advance !!!

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/8/2017

Some more history Trivia. Probably some errors due to my age-ing brain, and Ancel can correct them. Quite a few FedExr's came from First Tennessee & Data Communications Corp since both used Burroughs computers which FedEx used initially. DCC was the innovator of using computers to process radio & tv advertising, scheduling & billing. In early days of TV, selling & scheduling was done manually with post cards. The cards would be laid out in order so that the commercials could be put in order for daily broadcasts. Many times companies wanted to book commercials in multiple cities where stations were owned by many different companies. Enter DCC. They developed an initial system using Burroughs TC workstations connected online to a Burroughs mainframe. With it commercials could be booked in any time slot across multiple stations automatically. I believe it might have been Jim Ziegler who worked on the initial system. WMCTV was the first pilot system. Within a few years the DCC system was used by over 500 television and radio stations all connected by a multidrop network emanating from Memphis on Director's row. DCC also formed a mini computer division MSD or MCD. Because remote computers could only be connected to one mainframe, multiple circuits went into the same cities. DCC developed a front end switch using Modcomp computers which connected all the stations and then communications to those stations could be connected to any of the 3 DCC mainframes (one Honeywell Multics system and two Burroughs 6700-7700). DCC decided to sell communications services using the Modcomps and named the subsidiary "The Datacomm Company". (Ancel Hankins, Terry Cox, Jimmy Burk, Rick Simmons, Dave Goggans, Sivimani Kamersweran & Jim Ziegler were some of the initial employees). Doug Rother was in the Telecom department but he stayed with the Broadcast Division. Later , with some other investors, the company was named Cylix and relocated to Ridgeway. The DCC BIAS division was sold to Storer Television or Jefferson Pilot years later. Edited ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/8/2017

I believe Dave passed away in the last year or two. He was on facebook. After Datacomm was formed Jim Glass, Reece Dike & Gary Holmes also joined the software team. Ancel left to be a manager at FedEx, Ancel then hired Terry Cox.

Clayton Roderick4/20/2017

Happy 65th Birthday to my Brother Fred & Congratulations on your Retirement from FedEx Express as the #1 Pilot!!!!I'll offer the following as the example you have set:"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."- Henry David ThoreauFreds Farewell to his fellow Pilots:Forty three years, what a ride, it seems like yesterday. I'm at cruise, flying my last trip back from VCP watching the Amazon sunset as I type this, I would be lying if I told you I was enjoying writing this letter. Like many of you, flying has been a way of life, it's not easy to give up, but time goes on, and at least "everyone" gets to move up a number. As for the "thank you's", first to all the folks for all the opportunities and help throughout the years, and obviously Mr. Smith, who not only had the dream, but also the nerve to stick with that dream in the early years when Federal Express's survival was "absolutely, positively" in serious doubt. Most of all I want to thank the good Lord for causing me to catch that red light at Democrat and Republican on that day, August 21,1974, and thanks especially to whoever the guy was that put the little cardboard sign on that corner saying in small letters, "Federal Express" with an arrow pointing to the right. I made that right turn, they hired me on the spot and told me to show up at midnight in jeans and a t-shirt, I was 22, the rest is history. I've often wondered what my life would have been like if I hadn't caught that light, or that sign wasn't there, even in my wildest dreams I can't imagine it could ever have come close to the life I have enjoyed for these 43 years. The point is this, none of us simply fell into this, this is where we all wanted to be, we've all arrived, your working for the best of the best, the worst hub turn beats the best 9 to 5. Enjoy yourself, time really will fly by and you'll be writing one of these letters before you know it. May all of your careers be as fun and fulfilling as mine has been... My son who works at FedEx sent me the photo below asking if I was going to buy 'Take that for data' t-shirt' inspired by grizz coach David Fizdale on loss to the Spurs. I've copied his rant below. It brought back memories of Jim Barksdale. He dis-liked everyone always pitching ideas to him impromptu without any data or even without writing the idea down to look at....he also dis-liked that many of his managers couldn't spell.... --- “If we have data, let’s look at data. If all we have are opinions, let’s go with mine.”― Jim Barksdale

Mike Acord I hired on Jan, 2 1986. A few weeks later we were all clustered around a tiny b&w in the Data Lab watching the launch and shocking explosion of the Challenger. I clearly remember that Terry Cox and I were smoking at the time. When I hired on, you could smoke anywhere. Not too long after that, it was restricted to our cubicle, i.e., no walking around and smoking. It wasn't long before we banned to outside. Luckily, the property manager was a smoker, and had a little roof put over the rear entrance at 2828 so we at least didn't get rained on. :) BTW, after 40 yrs of smoking, I quit on 5-13-2006, and haven't smoked since. 4 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/27/2017

...and I remember being called to a meeting with the sr. officers for something. They were celebrating something that had happened and they broke out the cigars....so much smoke that you could not see the other side of the room....FWS paused and said...we've got to do something about this smoking...it's going to kill us....and a month or two later the edicts on restricting smoking started. 3 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/27/2017

Charlie's mention of smoking brought back a memory of Terry Cox aka TAC. He was a militant type smoker, firmly believed it was a right that should have been written into the Constitution. When smoking was restricted to outside the buildings, Terry bought a desktop air filter for his office, then proceeded to seal off the bottom of the door and then enjoy the aroma of the smoke. If you knocked on his door, it would take at least 5 minutes before he could open the door.....and later after a mild heart attack, he quit cold turkey. 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/27/2017

and it was interesting that after smoking was stopped and people got used to breathing and smelling smokeless air, then there were more complaints about those that wore intense perfumes and that started affecting some employees.... Edited · 2 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk4/29/2017

FedEx History Trivia: Answers... 1. What happened in Russia in the 70's that greatly impacted FedEx IT? Their wheat harvest was good......which changed the direction of FedEx IT Cook Commodities in Memphis was the 3rd largest broker in the world. Russia had failed wheat and grain harvests for several years requiring them to buy grain abroad to feed their people. Cook had a major part of that business. Some people at Cook believed that Russia harvest would fail again so they started buying up futures. But Russia had a successful harvest and Cook was greatly in debt. There was a meeting at a church between Jim Barksdale (Cook) and I think Pete Wilmott maybe and the offer was made to take over Cook's IT processing giving FedEx a future large mainframe order in queue and trained IBM staff. Without the successful Russian harvest, Federal might still be running Burroughs/now Unisys mainframes...

2. When FedEx needed space to expand at the airport in the 70's, who told them No Way you are going to get our space! The head of the National Guard was the correct answer. They had hundreds of years on their lease...and said they would not let us have any space...FWS engaged our Tennessee politicians to assist

3. How many fedex jets flew the day the FAA controllers went on strike? I think all flights were grounded that first day, and then military controllers were called in by Pres. Reagan. In the first rules of flying...no one could fly at night only in the daytime.....FWS got that rule changed rather quickly..

4. When was the very first time that Federal Express shut down all flights? At FedEx's first launch of about 7 planes only 6 packages were on those flights, and one of the packages was a gift that FWS was shipping. They decided to take 1-2 months and run models on what they were doing wrong. All packages, which were few were put on commercial airlines and delivered by FedEx couriers. The models found that we were going to wrong cities and we especially needed to fly packages out of IBM's Rochester location. A restart was done,,,and FedEx considered the next launch the real one....

5. A young fedex employee once wrote a poem mockingly supporting the pilots efforts for a new contract and posted that poem on his running club online bulletin board for his pilot runners in the club, in jest. Who was this humanoid and what happened with this posting (....there was really no world wide web at the time...) This was Gary Holmes, who unfortunately has passed away. Within hours his poem was distributed literally around the world and used as a rallying cry by the union. Gary was barred from jumpseat for life by the chief pilot. Two pilots landed in Anchorage, read the poem and decided that Gary was too dangerous for them to fly to Memphis. They called security and sent two people over to escort Gary off FedEx premises. I turned them away. Fortunately for Gary...something even more ridiculous happened several weeks later, and the attention was turned away from Gary....

6. What is the department called that models almost everything that is to happen at FedEx..and who built that department? Ops Research headed by Dr. Ron Ponder

7. Which systems upcharge packages automatically sent thru the hub and metroplexes? The Dimming Systems, MSDS, Future OPs and SPSS all do this.

8. What are the first sort points/belts in the hub called? primaries

9. What major event has shut down most of the hub? The main feed belt locked up causing the belt to catch fire.

10. What is the meeting called every Friday which has hundreds of people on the call? WAR Edited · 1 ·

Akita Hank5/6/2017

Akita Hank 1. The back story as told to me by Larry Stoltenberg, Manager of IT at the time: The plan was for FedEx to upgrade their Burroughs system to the largest version coming out that year to support the package business which was deemed to have very high transaction rate requirements. And to purchase smaller IBMs to run off-the-shelf business applications. Charlie Brandon met with Burroughs president to negotiate the deal. The president did not treat Charlie and FedEx with sufficient deference and told Charlie FedEx would have to take their place in line just like everyone else. so the plan was changed, replace Burroughs with IBM totally. That would require their largest system, also coming out that year. Of course, at that late date FedEx could not get a favorable delivery date. Somehow the big wigs at FedEx and Cook Industries came together. With Cook Industries’ impending financial disaster, their very favorable delivery date for the IBM system and trained operations and development staff, they struck a deal. FedEx purchased Cook’s complete IT infrastructure in Clark Tower and hired most of their operations and development staff. It was determined that meeting the planned transaction rate required emulating the car rental/airline ticketing systems. That, in turn, required running IBM’s Airline Control Program (ACP). That required obtaining developers with specialized skills that were not available in-house. As expected, the pool of skilled ACP programmers was very small, and few of them would be willing to move to Memphis. Ultimately, arrangements were made to hire the the wizard of Avis, Howard Bedford, and his development staff. More detail is available at http://fedexlegends.info/earlyit/earlyithistory.html. Answer: This was a photo of a DC10 or MD11 on it's tail. Photo is listed as a Memphis location, but it also happend, I think in LAX. Before loading thru a rear door or pushing containers to the back of the aircraft, the nose had to be tied down with a cable. The plane was tied down initially, but a mechanic noticed that the cable was frayed and not safe. So he removed it, and went to get a new one. Evidently he didn't tell anyone and they started to load the aircraft.....

Carolyn Fiveash Perkins4/28/2017

I thought I'd pass on this info as it relates to Medicare and supplements. I've seen several posts about which supplement is best. My husband choose AARP Plan F as his supplement because we travel a lot and did not want to have to get referrals to see a doctor if we were out of town.My husband was recently diagnosed with a Glioblastoma brain tumor when we were visiting Florida. We spent 3 nights in the hospital in Florida. All bills have been paid by Medicare and AARP. We owe nothing. We flew home to have his surgery. He was in the hospital here 3 days. I haven't received all the paperwork on that hospital visit and surgery but it appears we will owe nothing. He starts radiation and chemo next week at West Clinic. While at West Clinic yesterday, we were told the estimate for his treatments over the next few months is a little over $35,000 but we will owe nothing. Medicare and AARP will take care of it.I am very pleased with the fact that we've owed nothing for the doctors, surgery and hospitals. The only out of pocket expenses we have had is for the prescriptions we've been sent home with.Hope this info is helpful as others, like me, have to sign up for Medicare and choose which supplement is best for them.

Gary Phillips4/28/2017

Gary Phillips Thanks Carolyn. I'll be changing from BCBS Medicare Advantage to one of the F plans. I turn 65 in 2018.so can change. Those plans are very expensive before 65. I was able to go Medicare due to disability (back). 1 ·

Akita Hank5/6/2017

Akita Hank B. Genesis was the fax project before it became ZapMail. It was named after Fred's son's Astrological sign. At Least that is what I heard at a time…

Deby Abbott Jolley5/7/2017

Deby Abbott Jolley B. There may have been more than one Genesis project, but the most recent one that I know of was (if I'm remembering correctly) imaging Customs Clearance documents and transmitting them to the destination location to get a jump start on Clearance at the destination.

Jimmy Glenn Burk5/7/2017

Deby is correct. Genesis was the imaging of airbills and customs documents. Gemini was prototype name for Zapmail. 1 ·

a. what is/was REDS REDS was the project to scan and transmit airbills to other locations for keyers to enter the airbill data before the deliverys were complete. It fell behind schedule b. what is/was GENESIS b. GENESIS was the project to also scan airbills in stations locations and OCR the data, so that it could be used for billing and eventually for planning courier routes for deliveries. c. what is/was PLAID c d. PLAID was the FedEx Express project to take all the PUPS and airbill data and to pre-plan the loading of the vans with packages and to deliver in a sequence that would save courier time and delivery expenses. d. what is/was POLICE POLICE was a prototype project to also scan airbills and OCR them real time at the station instead of removing a copy of the airbill to place in a local scanner. 1 ·

In the early days....before the ASTRA label, most packages came with an airbill, and sometimes a station identifier written on them. Package handlers had to look at the zip code on the airbill, and type it in a Primary keypad, which produced a label to attach to the package. ZODIAC initially was the use of an overhead OCR scanner/camera which could locate the zip code and automatically print the label or just send it down the primary belt to proper diverter. ZODIAC was prototyped to speed up the primaries and increase the SuperHub thruput.

I've got a benefits question: What is reported to the IRS for the "income" received from OneExchange for the Medicare HRA, the $85 per month subsidy we receive from FedEx after we turn 65? Since it is called an HRA, I would guess that it is non-taxable but do we receive a 1099 of some sort from OneExchange that we report to the IRS when we file our taxes? Or is it just invisible income? Thanks.

Fran Schwaiger Weiss5/25/2017

Fran Schwaiger Weiss Ray, how do you apply for the $85 subsidy when you turn 65?

Ray Lipham5/25/2017

Ray Lipham Hi Fran! You should receive a packet from OneExchange, "approximately 60 days before you or your covered spouse/partner turns 65". That quote is from the " 2017 Pre-65 Retiree Health Enrollment Guide". Furthermore "You must contact OneExchange to activate your Health Reimbursement Arrangement within 120 days of your Medicare eligibility date" or you lose the benefit as some FedEx retirees have because they were not aware of the benefit. If for some reason you or your spouse don't receive the packet by that time, I would suggest that you call FedEx Benefits, 800-888-5622. Both my wife and I received our packets before the 60 days of our eligibility.

Ray Lipham5/25/2017

Ray Lipham One further note: I think that you and/or your spouse have to be on the FedEx Retiree Health plan at the time you turn 65 in order to receive the benefit. I may be wrong about that so don't take that as a fact.

Fran Schwaiger Weiss5/27/2017

Why the U.S. Needs Air Traffic Control Reform

Shane Borden6/10/2017

Shane Borden Everything can always be improved, but Bronzak only has FedEx in mind. The system isn't that bad and user fees are not the way to do it. The bottom line is that the airlines are looking to go to a flat fee vs. the per gallon excise tax system we have today. This is what is really going on. We are already moving toward improved aircraft spacing with the adaptation of ADS-B (a significant cost to aircraft owners) and most delays occur due to ground infrastructure not the airways. The regular guy can barely afford to fly as it is. Add another $50-60 to each flight and General Aviation will be pummeled to look like it does in Europe. Why do you think they come here to fly? There will be tons of unintended consequences should we go this route. The pilot pool will only shrink if this cost burden is shifted like this plan entails. For an alternative viewpoint, see what AOPA has to say about it. ‪AOPA Expresses Concern about Trump's ATC Plan https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/aopa-live?watch=2ff6de38-357c-3375-9511-77a75ef72f37#.WTvn8xdORlE.twitter‬ AOPA Live aopa.org 2 ·

Leigh Pritchett Sawicki6/10/2017

Leigh Pritchett Sawicki Not all facilities still use paper strips. But totally agree that the system is in dire need of new controllers. My husband will be forced to retire in 3 1/2 months and years ago many started telling managent that there's a wave of retirements coming and it was obvious that the hiring wasn't going to keep up. The biggest wave started about 1-2 years ago and will continue another 2 years. These are mainly the hires from after Reagan fired the strikers Edited · 2 ·

Shane Borden6/10/2017

Shane Borden It was a career change that I actually contemplated at one point. The age requirement for new controllers of no older than 31 stopped that dead in its tracks. 1 ·

Mike Acord6/15/2017

Mike Acord Answers Jimmy Glenn Burk ??

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/15/2017

1. In the early days of Federal Express, some customers refused to do this? Some very large customers refused to fill out airbills. They didn't want to do this because there was already a label and address on the package, and they didn't have to do this with UPS normal package delivery.

2. When FedEx tries to sell to a very very large customer, they use this system to number crunch their current & project sales and delivery patterns to compute their discount. Name the system. Info SuperHub - Teredata

3. Very large customers use this system to get their billing and tracking data? Powership Plus

4. This computer vendor's software was once purchased for $27M, but FedEx couldn't use it for quite a while. Name the computer or software vendor and why it couldn't be used. Oracle Software -The Pilot contract was very difficult to formalize and there were some pilot actions. FWS gave direction to do no new development until the Pilot issue was resolved, so no new projects needing the software were approved.

5. FedEx once bought 600 of these small computer systems but never used them. Name the systems and why? NCR Tower for Business Service Centers. The systems had only bisync communications which FedEx did not support on the network. They were warehoused, and later sold to someone who needed the towers.

6. The year was 1980. What was the service committment to deliver packages? Noon

7. Why did Federal Express once sell airline seats to employees? FedEx purchased five Boeing 737's in anticipation of using the aircraft during the day to fly passengers in order to utilize the aircraft. The 737's came with roll in airline seats which could be easily removed to convert the aircraft to a freighter. Federal shut down the project when after a year of politiking, it could only get rights to fly to one city (Chicago-Midway). The seats were offered to employees for a small cost. As a history note, American airlines also experimented with this. They used some aircraft for freight during the day, then rolled in airline seats and did redeye passenger flights at night. 1 ·

Eric Brosch6/19/2017

I know that Federal Express experimented with the idea of dual-purpose planes - carrying passengers during the day and cargo at night. Did we ever actually get that service started or was it only a concept? I'm very curious what the passenger experience would have been like. Did we hire flight attendants, etc?I was at the Boeing Museum of Flight in Everett, WA and saw this plane. It is/was a 737-200QC "quick change" configuration which belonged to Eastern Airlines and FedEx at one point. I'd love to hear more about whether we ever carried passengers on one of these and what the experience was like!

Eric Brosch6/19/2017

Eric Brosch Apparently EAL carried cargo at one point as well. The extra weight of the QC configuration turned out to not be economical when carrying passengers. 1 ·

Walt Edmonds6/19/2017

Walt Edmonds That idea never got started. Thought about heavily but that was about it. 2 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/20/2017

as i remember, FedEx purchased 5 737s to start the passenger flights. it took one year to get one license to fly to one city, Midway in Chicago. other airlines were hurting with an oil embargo and losing money. FedEx business was growing rapidly so the passenger idea went away and the 737s were sold. it was rumored that one of the 737s was never paid for and the company hired some experts to steal it back although thus could be a legend. Edited · 1 ·

Eric Brosch6/20/2017

Eric Brosch Thanks, Jimmy! That makes sense. I'd always heard we explored the concept but when I saw that we'd gotten as far as buying planes I wondered if it had gone further than I realized. Thanks for all the work you put into this group. I'm coming up on 19 years and I love learning about the history. 2 ·

Timothy Joseph Frassinelli6/20/2017

Timothy Joseph Frassinelli It was one of several thousand concepts that never came to fruition! Fred very quickly came to the realization that any maintenance or scheduling issues during the day might possibly jeopardize the reliability of the ever so lucrative package business at night and low and behold, before You knew it, we were turning a "DAY" sort six days a week!! 1 ·

Eric Brosch6/20/2017

Eric Brosch That makes perfect sense. In hindsight, as usual, he was right. Passenger airlines are not terribly lucrative. 1 ·

Jimmy Glenn Burk6/30/2017

It was the UK data center before it was combined with the Brussels ops center. There were 3 global Telecom managers initially. Alfred Pun in Asia, Ted Crampton in the UK, and Denis Guerts in Brussels and I think one of the managers in Memphis handled South America.

Gary Harlan7/1/2017

Gary Harlan Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think it was part of the Lex Wilkinson acquisition. The thought was that in buying an already established delivery service in the UK that it would position FedEx to provide better competition for the Royal Post. The main hub was in Nuneaton for processing UK local deliveries.

Gary Phillips I was there way back when to survey the site. I believe we were looking at moving or possibly downsizing the facility if I remember right.
