Melody Preuitt Mettes3/23/2015
Tax question: are our medical insurance payments tax-deductible? My accountant is telling me they are IF they are taken out after taxes. If they are, then there's a box on my 1099 that should have shown the total insurance payments...and it doesn't.
Don Rose3/23/2015
If they are not, they should be. Anything the law requires you to have should be deductible.
Gary Phillips3/23/2015
They are taken out after taxes because some of us pay directly each month (not deducted from check). That is after taxes for sure. They should be deductible.
Linda Cook Thorn3/23/2015
But they are not deductible if you claim them on your YSA and get reimbursed. This is if you took the buyout.
Patricia Ross3/23/2015
I claim mine as part of my medical deductions.

FedEx Trivia Quiz 3/25/15In the very early days FedEx volume was increasing rapidly and was up to 11,000 packages a day. Management was trying expand every way they could.Business Week printed an article "Federal Express takes a Nosedive". It's premise that FedEx was keeping it's promise of overnight deliveries but had to use it own aircraft and was expanding faster than management could handle. An executive in the company commissioned a study which recommended that FedEx cut costs by eliminating all the cities that cost too much on the network: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Seattle and Boston.
The rest of the management team just ignored this order from this top executive and proceeded with expansion.Fred Smith quoted that this recommendation was like "General Eisenhower attempting to lead Ho Chi Minh's guerillas."Who was the executive?

I think Edith Kelly was the first VP of quality.
Jimmy Glenn Burk3/27/2015
Answers:
In the late 80's Federal made a tremendous effort to manage by quality.
1. Why? it was a way to improve operations and service with more input and creativity. Before this, FWS always got this statement...'if you want the service levels to improve...we have to have more money in operations'; this was an attempt to improve service to the customer and save money as a new paradigm
2. How many people were trained in Quality?
in memphis...everyone...they got 2 or 3 days training; management got 5 days...and if SFA didn't reflect 95% of the staff thought the Director was dedicated to Quality...he was sent to mandatory remedial training for 2 more days......
3. What was one of the target goals/prize?
The malcom baldridge award was the goal....no service company had ever won it
4. How many quality administrators were trained/hired?
a. 100 b. 200 c. 300 d. 500
b. 200 new positions
5. Who was the first dedicated VP of Quality?

She had on a long jacket & it looked as if that was all she had on. She turned around & had shorts on too...thank goodness. The jacket was longer than the shorts!
Jimmy Glenn Burk4/7/2015
Answers:
1. At one time, IT personnel in Orlando and Colorado could wear shorts.
True for Colorado, False for Orlando
2. FedEx looked at installing small zapmail like machines in vans.
TRUE : FWS requested a look at small scanners capable of reading and transmitting airbill info in order to get info about the packages coming into the system to plan for the Sort. Later GENESIS did this by scanning at the stations.
3. FedEx once considered utilizing new spectrum to broadcast to customers, free movies at night.
TRUE: Jim Moore and the Radio group looked at distributed microwave and low power UHF channels with some ideas on using the channels at night for programming.
4. FedEx paid $15M for marketing to have Federal Express be the focus in the movie Castaway.
FALSE: FedEx refused to pay the marketing cost proposal, then the producers decided the movie would not have the same effect if another carrier was used...ie UPS
5. The Orlando/Maitland Florida programming site was created to develop a billing system that didn't require programming for changes.
TRUE: One of the features of CHRONOS was to be able to make changes to customer rating schemes with tables...ie somewhat like SAP
6. The Colorado Springs site was started to develop a reservation system for FedEx to fly passengers.
FALSE: this was a followon idea though. COSMOS was developed on the idea of having a reservation system for packages, much like AVIS had for cars. AVIS ran on ACP operating system on IBMS and the person that led that effort was hired into FedEx.
7. 10% of all Zapmail documents were sent from Washington DC to Washington DC
TRUE
