FedEx Trivia Quiz DADSIn the late 80's, early 90's Motorola bought the company that made FedEx's van terminals (company was MDI of Vancouver). Motorola then had the terminal built offshore for $600 and sold to FedEx for about $1800 each(we mistakenly received a bill from the offshore company showing us the Motorola prices).Motorola then decided to stop production of the MDT(mobile data terminal) and force FedEx to purchase a minimum order 20,000 of the new Motorola built terminal for $3200 each. This would force FedEx to also change out much of their radio network equipment and protocols. Motorola decided that FedEx had no options and had to buy from them. What did FedEx do?

George Moore5/13/2015

Designed our own and got them manufactured in Arab, AL for around $800 ea. (I think).

Mark Baugh5/13/2015

Anything but buy from Motorola ...

Peter Dangerfield5/13/2015

We did the same thing on the Falcon windshields. falcon Jet were charging us over $1800 per panel in the seventies, so we had our own manufacture for $800 with PPG in the U.S.

Jimmy Glenn Burk5/18/2015

from Jim Moore (discussing all the dollars saved at FedEx by doing things inhouse): I was discussing Maintenance (telecom stuff, DADS, radio etc) and got to thinking about the BERT program, and Cetecea… Between those two programs Millions were saved and probably the best local service support I’ve ever witnessed provided.. BERT - JJ Wood, was the Trainer, and perfect for that role, trained a line haul driver or courier at each station, on how to diagnose and change out anything that didn’t work. Put in special colored cases and ship to Memphis, Hub pulled these cases and sent them Support facility. We charged stations something like $2.50 or $5. Per Dads or some such for each radio item per month and with that purchased antennas, etc. MDI wanted $20/ month for a mx support. Moto wanted the same for the radio,,,, we never did that,,, So as for savings, Winn, you can add that to the pile… Have a good one, 73’s JIM

FedEx Triviaa. In the early 2000's Express brought in a consultant to evaluate IT spending. They determined that IT spent approximately $120M a year on Telecom, and most companies our size spent about $10M/year. They recommended that FedEx cut $100M out of their telecommunications budget. What did Express do?b. In the early 2000's another consultant was brought in. They found that FedEx resources were not aligned to what FedEx needed. 25% of resources were on billing/Chronos, 25% were on Automation, and 25% were on DGO and 25% on everything else. They recommended re-alignment of all resources. What did FedEx Services do?

FedEx once gave employee bonus' twice a yeard. ITD once gave you your birthday as a holidaye. FedEx gives unlimited sick daysf. If you miss work and don't call in, you are fired after 5 daysg. Marsha Terry Rider5/25/2015

like Buddy said, except: E) True - there were no set number of sick days (while many argued for it, JLB thought if would become de facto personal days), outside of the criteria governing STD of course. F) True (although, I was thinking it was less days) H) Since you guys were there before me (me in Dec'86) I should agree with Buddy. However I distinctly remember being taught by Gary Ragsdale to send a Profs message on his PC. Also I don't remember the TSO-based email until the next year when I was in the IT area.

FedEx Trivia QuizIn the 80's another transportation company started overnight deliveries. Their Hub was in Birmingham AL; there was heavy fog for about 3 days and their planes could not take off. FedEx did a commercial of their couriers, carrying packages, and lost & bumping into each other, in the fog. All of a sudden a FedEx courier pops out of the fog and says 'FedEx ..Delivery!'Which company was this commercial targeting?

Buddy Johnson5/29/2015

Mary A Johnson5/30/2015

Jimmy Glenn Burk5/30/2015

Answer: UPS There was a slight fear that if UPS couldn't make their overnite delivery system work, that they might just buy Federal Express; on paper it was worth $1B and UPS had huge cash reserves

FedEx PollFor those who have evolved to Medicare from FedEx Insurance..Do you pay less than for the FedEx Insurance including any supplementals? Has Medicare been easier or harder to use than Cigna?

Doris McInturff6/1/2015

I find Medicare FAR easier to work with than Cigna. And much cheaper. Ace McInturff

Jack Brown6/1/2015

My wife and I are both on Medicare and have an Advantage plan with Humana for Parts A through D. Our monthly premium is $27 per month per person in addition to the $104 withheld by Social Security. Most of the $104 is sent to Humana. Whatever insurance company you plan to use, I recommend using their mail order pharmacy. We have eliminated most of our prescription co-pays by using Humana's mail order.

Nancy Hinds6/2/2015

I am thinking of shopping this year.... 2 adults on FedEx retiree insurance and the deductibles etc - I am just curious - so gonna shop it...

Irene Williams6/2/2015

Medicare is cheaper, even after adding a supplement. Alternatively, an advantage plan for Parts A,B and D is also cheaper than FedEx insurance.

Nancy Hinds6/2/2015

I need a better deal between now and Medicare time..

Gary Phillips6/2/2015

I'm starting to think the Obama plan may be easier to deal with than Cigna.......just kidding but I'm starting to really dislike them. I can't imagine using them for supplemental once I go to medicare.

Janie Haynes6/3/2015

I think Medicare is much easier - cheaper too!

Jack Brown6/3/2015

IMHO, an Advantage Plan is better than a Supplemental Plan.

Peggy Dawson Black6/3/2015

Is anybody who's not Medicare eligible doing some other than Cigna?

It also says "The law allows us to assess this payment against you for not securing minimum essential health insurance for you and your dependents, if applicable." Sounds like "Affordable Health Care" is doing it's usual stellar job.
