John is correct. Bedford was a Sr. VP reporting to Brandon, also a SVP. And when Fred fired Bedford, he promoted Hank, then a Director, to VP.

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/25/2013

Interesting...maybe svp reporting to svp. was Hank in COS or in Memphis at the time?

John Toscano7/25/2013

Thanks Dan. Hank was in COS. Charles Brandon was the SVP/CIO. Howie may have been considered as the heir apparent. Surely he considered the potential "career path." I think that may be what Cheryl was alluding to.

FedEx Trivia QuizFedEx billing started with 80 column punch cards keyed and processed into an Burroughs mainframe. Around the mid 90's around 60+ employees did COBOL programming to process customer billing.Dennis Jones did not like IBM and the cost of a new mainframe was around $5M every time one was added, so he wanted to get off the mainframe into the Unix world. He started a project call CHRONOS. Like all major projects it was a technical challenge and was difficult to meet expectations. It started with contracting several hundred Anderson Consulting personnel to help redesign the system in the Orlando area.Who was the first VP over Chronos? the second? and the third?

Chris Apalodimas7/23/2013

I think the 2d one was JP Sarkis.

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/23/2013

John Wilkinson7/23/2013

Charlotte Benton Hieronymus7/25/2013

Does anyone know if any wireless companies offer discounts to FedEx retirees? I'm on Verizon now and was just asked to renew my monthly discount. In checking I have to provide a valid FedEx email account or a copy of a FedEx pay stub. After talking with someone at Verizon they told me they do not honor discounts for FedEx retirees...only active employees.

Laura Ladd Beard7/25/2013

att, as far as know.

Gary Phillips7/25/2013

I have a retired friend that still gets a disc eith Verizon. AT&T Does as well.

Charlotte Benton Hieronymus7/25/2013

Gary...I retired the end of 2008 and have been with Verizon but they are now sending out notices to renew. That's how I found out that I have 30 days to let them know if I'm an active employee. When I talked to them they said the discount doesn't apply to retirees and that I will lose the discount at the end of the 30 days.

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/25/2013

This is what the FedEx Retiree Club posted a while back: FedEx Cell Phone Discounts FedEx Retirees are NOT eligible for discounts with the FedEx approved cell phone vendors such as ATT, Verizon, etc. However, if you had a plan with one of the vendors at the time you retired from FedEx, then that vendor may continue to grant you those discounts moving forward. Keep in mind that this is a courtesy on their part and they could change it at any time.

Charlotte Benton Hieronymus7/25/2013

Thanks Jimmy! Apparently Verizon is not honoring it any more! UGH!

Jimmy Glenn Burk7/25/2013

I still have the att discount...at least so far.

Gary Phillips7/25/2013

AT&t is honoring mine as well. Judt added a phone and ipad. Like I mentioned, s friend gold me she was still getting the disc st Verizon.

Diane Conner White7/25/2013

I got the same email from Verizon but luckily my husband is still employed there...at least for the short term.

Charlie Derrick7/25/2013

With the growth of FedEx, the company decided it wouldn't grow this support linearly. In the 90's there was one of these support people for every 1500 employees in the Memphis area. Managers were told they had to do this support themselves. What did this support person do?

It was the HR group and they cut the ratio of personnel reps to employees. The managers and MD's were told they had to handle GFT investigations and complaints initially and then pass off findings to Personnel.

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/5/2013

Answer(maybe) MD of Automation (for the IT side) 1 - Steve Steilling 2 - Dave Dalton (from COS) (Business MD-Jim Schmideke) 3 - Kurt Kunzel (Business owner MD - Laurie Tucker) 4 - Jim Thannum "The first automation device was an Apple II computer. Development was originally by Mark Ramsey and Lydle Simpson.Second device was a Vector computer capable of running Apple programs and Basic programs under CP/M.Epson meters were used for a time also. After the Zapmail shutdown, Dennis Jones had become the business owner for billing, and Federal needed to buy things from NEC to meet commitments from Zapmail orders. Dennis requested 25,000 NEC APC computers and renamed the Customer Automation program 'Powership'.I contacted Mike Struminger and he gave me his memories below(mine are failing).Mike's memories: Well when I first started, Roy Hawkins was the manager and eventual Sr Mgr, Steve Steiling was the director, and Hank Howell was the VP. This was when we had the Epson Meter was the 1st device (driven by Paul Lucking and programmed by Steve Stewart and Joel Neely – plus whatever kickbacks were rumored to I think something like Spectrum Printing who did the programming but also supplied a lot if not all of our airbills at the time). We also had a DOS 2.1 device but I can’t remember the name, which is where Jerry Knight wrote something in compiled basic, I inherited it, threw it out and rewrote it (with Linda Brigance & Luke Jones) to make it the version that ultimately was labeled CAPS (probably stood for customer automation processing system but I honestly don’t remember). Craig Bell ran things from the Sales side. I can’t remember the exact timeline but Pat Galvin I believe came in as VP when Hank left and I seem to remember Roy (as a Sr Mgr) ended up reporting directly to Pat but this is a bit cloudy. I can’t remember how Steiling got out of the mix. When Dennis Jones came in, he made Schmiedicke the business owner but the IT side was still Pat and Roy. I left when Roy was replaced by Dave Dalton and Pat by Jim Tollefson.

Gary Phillips8/5/2013

Schmiedicke is who I wss thinking of.rather than Schwartzman.

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/6/2013

When Dennis Jones had oversight of the automation devices and billing it was recognized that the power of the units was not preparing shipping labels but automating billing and shipping information way before the package shipped. By the time I retired in 2006, about 70 percent of billing was received from automation devices & edi transmissions.

Jimmy Glenn Burk8/6/2013

from Winn Stephenson: Memory is way too fuzzy for me. I thought Miley was somehow in charge for a brief period, but maybe not. Also, there were two more automation devices not listed - The home built thing that Bruce built. I think it was a competitor to PS3. Also, Barksdale had a small device developed that was call the Sally B after his wife. Not sure if we deployed any of them. -------- Notes: (There were 12-15,000 Powership 3's deployed which were designed to put on office desks; The 'Sally B' was code name used for a pad type device developed by SIS. Jim Barksdale told them he wanted a device that his wife Sally could use to ship with. Only a few were deployed. Cost was $800 w/o printer and PC's were just a couple hundred dollars more. SIS called the project COSMOS IIC. ..and Miley was over the development group for the Powership 3. It was the first automation device with a GUI versus drop down character type menus.)

Pilot Story: I was at a nice birthday luncheon today for a friend, and someone told this story about a friend of theirs that was one of the first pilots at FedEx who was in his early 20's when he started. ----------------- He moved to Memphis to fly the falcons. FWS welcomed him, and asked him how he was doing. He said not too good. I haven't been able to find anywhere that will rent or lease to me. I'm 20 years old, with no job record. Fred went with him, and co-signed his lease so he would have a place to stay.Later, the pilot, who was quite a character, was known to fly over the speed limit of the 727's...most of the time. When he got the route to Charlotte, the UPS plane always landed first at the airport. (The UPS jet was probably coming from Louisville Kentucky). He decided that just wasn't right. The cruising speed was around 550 mph and he was going about 632mph. He caught up with the UPS jet in his lane, and was passing him. He contacted Charlotte and wanted to know what his position was to land. They asked him his airspeed...he said 550mph......they said we will get back to you.A few minutes later the tower contacted ...and said...FedEx you will be first to land.....Your speed of 550mph is faster than the UPS flight speed of 550mph........

She had plenty of vacation and travelled often. Work wasn't a job to her, she got to be with people she liked to be with. Her daughter sent a letter to Fred Smith thanking him for a company that would let someone work there and for many years. She wanted him to know how she appreciated what FedEx had done for her Mom.FWS called the Director and told him he wanted to meet his admin and thank her for her service to the company. He told him he would have called her directly but didn't want to shock her by hearing...this is Fred Smith on the line. The Director drove her over to Ridgeway to FWS office and dropped her off. She went in to meet FWS and talk with him for a few minutes, and he thanked her for her many years of service.

In Your Own WordsTeam:'In Your Own Words' is currently featuring team members who are leaving the company as part of the Voluntary Buyout Program. It's one way we can honor their years of dedication to our company and the contributions they've made to our success. In this edition, Jud Williford, a DBA Principal on the Technical Design team, shares his stories and thoughts about our company. Jud will be leaving in November after more than three decades with FedEx. He's pictured below with his family.Jud, thank you for all you've done over the years. Your spirit, creativity and enthusiam will be remembered. All best to you and your family in the years ahead.Read and enjoy!-------K--------------------------------------------------------------------------------How long have you been with FedEx?I've been with FedEx 34 years as of last month (July). I was hired as a programmer trainee in 1979. I had been teaching Math at Memphis University School for a year after graduating from college, and applied at FedEx on a tip from a friend. My hiring senior manager, the late, great Charlie Germano, told everyone he had to hire me. Why? Because I played bagpipes and drove a 1950 Dodge! Needless to say, hiring policies have changed, but I like to think Charlie had good instincts. The IT group was based in Clark Tower at that time and expanding rapidly, so desk space was in short supply. As it happened, the HR director had just moved to new offices on Directors Row by the airport, so for the first several weeks I got to sit in his corner office overlooking East Memphis as I read from a stack of COBOL manuals and code listings.Who has inspired you over the years? That would be a long list! I think for most people, the best inspiration comes from folks who are in the trenches with them. I've been in a lot of different trenches with some very excellent people. You know who you are!Having said that, I have to tell my Mr. Smith story. In the early days we were small enough that he would come around periodically and spend time with us. Years later, my wife and I met him at my sons' elementary school as part of fundraising efforts by schools across the country to help fund the building of the WWII memorial, an effort Mr. Smith championed. He drove up by himself in his Blazer and just walked in and spoke! After the talk I introduced my wife, and she thanked him for my job, which had allowed us to raise a family. Without hesitating, he turned it around and thanked her with a very sincere acknowledgement of the company's dependence on the sacrifice that each employee and their family members make. What have you enjoyed most in your career?I have most enjoyed just riding the wave: working with so many different kinds of people on a broad range of business challenges and technologies and watching how things change.Development, databases, information security, enterprise modeling and architecture, planning and strategy formulation, it's all been fun.I have particularly loved opportunities to use my math skills to construct predictive models or do some analytics.I even got published for one effort. As I write this, I keep thinking of stories I could tell. I decided to try to get them down as I have time on myPurple Hub blog.Where do you see FedEx in 10 years?Have you ever seen that classic short,Powers of Ten? It came out in 1977, but here's an updated IMAX version with Morgan Freeman narrating. I think we are going to see our IT systems penetrate deeper and deeper in two directions:•Into our operations, in every vehicle, belt, container, location and package •Into the customer's life, via every computing device and system they use And our various initiatives with technologies like big data, analytics and complex event processing will continue to help us link and leverage these new depths for simultaneous operational efficiencies and customer bonding, just as science has over the centuries been able to leverage the development of optics and measuring devices that direct themselves to the infinite and the infinitesimal.Quips, quotes or parting thoughts?I'm taking the buyout, riding one more wave in November and I want to finish strong. In particular, I have a final personal milestone I'd love to hit. I am a part of a FedEx team that participates in the Corporate Knowledge Bowl competition, a benefit for the Memphis Public Library. For eight of the last nine years, our team has tried to win for FedEx the title of "Smartest Company in Memphis," and we've actually been runners up for the last two competitions. (Pictured below is the 2011 team with Clinton Menezes, Benny Arogyaswami, Ken Wilson and Ray Cross.)Delivering that bowl to Rob Carter this September would be a great way to cap my career. Now for a shameless plug: If you've got general trivia ability, or even knowledge depth in a specific area or two — like sports and literature — please contact me about joining our team.Or just show up to cheer us on at the tournament and help us win the Team Spirit award!
